🇬🇧 Those who had traumatic experiences in childhood do not usually have hobbies

Psychologists say that those who had traumatic experiences in childhood do not usually have hobbies. This text is about my childhood and how I dealt with the limitations that were imposed on me.

I'm Nycka Nunes, digital and cultural nomad, and I work as a visual artist, fine art photographer and stylist, in addition to creating content on this blog and on social media. I graduated in advertising.

I started working at 5 years old. I lived with my maternal grandmother for most of my childhood and adolescence.

When I was very young I studied ballet, piano and flute. I lived opposite the music conservatory in my hometown at the time. I've been passionate about piano ever since, but even though they enrolled me in the course, my family never encouraged me and I didn't have a piano to practice with. And I was frustrated with the lack of evolution between one class and another. The other courses I don't even remember wanting. I still reject the flute. I now know that narcissists - and emotionally immature people - tend to do things to impress others. Maybe that's why they enrolled me in these courses and others. To impress others, keep up with the Joneses.

I also liked to draw and I wanted to learn to paint, and I wasn't given any encouragement to do so. To the point where I got to draw only in therapy sessions, in childhood. I only went back to drawing in the first year of college for advertising. And, surprisingly to me, I was drawing well.

Notice that what was important to me, what brought me satisfaction and joy, was not encouraged. In some cases it was even prohibited. And that went beyond art. I remember once asking for a Barbie as a gift and my mother saying that I was no longer a child to play with dolls. I was a child. I started playing with boys, with He-Man and Thundercats dolls. I started playing football. And I continued to allow myself to be a child, even though I had to work and was treated like an adult by my mother and her family.

In the store, they put me in charge of organising the products in stock, hidden from customers. I thought it was boring, I did what had to be done quickly and went to the counter to try to serve customers. Several did not accept my help. I was small, and just as capable of serving them as the adult saleswomen. I knew the names and prices of everything, I knew where each product was, and I even knew better than the others what was in stock because most of the time I was in stock.

In childhood, I found in literature an escape from the annoyance and disrespect I experienced in living with my maternal family.

Unfortunately, for a large part of Brazilian society in inland cities, family is something above good and evil. Even as an adult, when I voiced criticism of abuse committed by family members, several people criticised me. I also got a lot of support when I talked about these bad experiences on social media.

The memories I have of living with my father's family are all good. After my parents' divorce, I started to see my father a lot less, but when he was there he was 100% there, always supporting me, praising me. My paternal grandmother used to talk to me a lot. My uncles also treated me very well, and respected my weird behaviour, for example, being isolated at Christmas parties when there were people I didn't know.

This positive interaction with my paternal family and the literature that took me to different realities than the one I lived with my maternal grandmother were essential for me to deal with the authoritarianism of my maternal grandmother and the cruelty of my mother and my aunts, who always they humiliated me, treated me badly, repeated countless times that I was ugly, stupid, useless, and no matter how good my grades at school or my behaviour were, nothing was good enough.

My self-esteem was low and remained so until I was in my thirties, because I placed too much importance on being loved by my mother's family. Today, if someone doesn't like me, I move on with my life, I've achieved great emotional autonomy. Anyone who doesn't value my qualities doesn't deserve my affection.

As I traveled to my father's farm on the weekends, and there I was always treated well, I really like to travel. I also like to practice individual physical activities (cycling, walking the dog, etc). And to watch football matches, but I usually only watch Palmeiras matches. Sometimes I watch games of some European teams too.

I look for joy and satisfaction in everything I do, and I've learned to be intolerant of certain attitudes. Because satisfaction was something forbidden to me in almost all of my childhood and adolescence. And I don't want to be satisfied only on weekends. That's why I don't limit my satisfaction to hobbies. I do not accept that only they bring me joy and relaxation.

And you, how do you deal with the bad experiences you had in childhood?

Passei a jogar futebol.

🇬🇧 Typical foods from Montes Claros, Brazil

I have already talked about typical dishes of all countries and also of the Brazilian states. Today I will talk about the typical foods of the 4 Brazilian cities in which I lived. A text for each. If you want to add any food that I haven't mentioned or make a comment without advertising anything, use the comments for that.

Montes Claros, Minas Gerais

The typical main dish is rice with pequi and carne de sol. Don't expect the carne de sol from Montes Claros to be similar to that of other Brazilian regions.

The carne de sol also accompanies pieces of cassava in a very common snack in the bars of the city.

Pequi, in turn, can be found in the form of liqueur, oil, ice cream, etc., so you can have the taste of this typical cerrado fruit at home and do whatever you want. I've tried pequi in other cities and Montes Claros is my favourite because it's easier to find very succulent pequi.

Another dish that is not exactly typical, because it has an ingredient that is not from the region, but I have never seen it outside, is surubim in sauce. They are pieces of surubim, a fish also called "pintado", in sauce. I prefer fish fillet because I don't like dealing with fish bones, but the dish is very tasty and the fish doesn't have many bones.

Two other foods I've never seen in other regions are the beaten rapadura (which I love) and a solid cheese-like requeijão (also very good). The beaten rapadura, despite the beaten name suggests an alcoholic drink, is lighter than the common rapadura and, if I'm not mistaken, is made up of the foam that forms in the pots during the production of the rapadura. The solid requeijão resembles a white cheese and has a very unique flavour. Great for use on sandwiches and salads.

I was once sent pequi oil at Christmas and I like it, you can create a lot, but Curitiba is much colder than Montes Claros, even in summer, and I had to put pequi oil in the sun for a few hours to use every day, because it is “frozen” in the package, at room temperature. 😅 With the sun, it thawed out enough that you can use it once. The upside is that it lasted for months. After a while, I had patience and left it in the sun all day, moving the package so that it was always in the sun, then I transferred the contents to a jar where I could collect the oil with a spoon, as we do with butter when making a cake.

Montes Claros, Minas Gerais

🇬🇧 Observing your dog’s limits

Continuing to talk about the energy expenditure of dogs, which we mentioned in the previous text about the advantages of daily walks with your dog, it is important to know the needs of each breed and observe them daily to realise their limits. Most crossbred dogs, mixed breed, in Brazil, have a profile of high need for exercise and physical activity, observable by their long, tapered muzzle. Generally, the Kennel Club website in your country must have the standard for each breed, physical and behavioural characteristics. Knowing this pattern you avoid acquiring an animal with needs that you are not willing to meet. On a day-to-day basis, you can observe your dog's behaviour on walks and when you return home and adjust the length of the walks according to the signs that the animal gives.

If you have no experience with dogs, I will share some personal experiences that can be helpful in understanding these signs, although it is possible that your dog's signs are different. I love sharing my experiences with my dogs (and cats) so that novice tutors can learn a little from them. If you want to share your experiences with the signals your dog gives regarding energy expenditure and walks or clarify doubts about the subject, use the comments. For questions, leave your financial contribution on our Ko-Fi profile.

One of my experiences was with a medium sized grey poodle named Nick that I had when I was about 20 years old. I liked hanging out with him, and Montes Claros, where I used to live at that time, is very hot. I went for a walk in the late afternoon, but it wasn't much cooler than a walk at midday. And the city is not one of the most wooded (I've already talked about Montes Claros in other texts on this site). And Nick was my partner for long walks (an hour at most, but given his size and the infernal heat of the city, they were long). Once, in the heat, he laid down under the shade of a tree to get some rest. We were already on our way home. At that time I didn't have much idea of how to take good care of a dog because it was mine to the hilt, I didn't know anything about vaccines. Castration and responsible ownership were things I only discovered much later, in 2004. And writing a text on a social network this week I remembered this situation and reflected that a tutor living in Montes Claros or any hot city anywhere in the world should bring water to the dog drinking during the walk. And walk at night, if possible, to avoid burning your pet's paws. This I didn't do because both my street and the one below were very dark at night in places that I had to cover on the sidewalks and, as I said, I was still quite ignorant.

Another case of observing the animal's limits happened with my last dog so far. It was a lhasa-apso that I adopted as an adult and already had information about being a responsible tutor. As he was a bully with other male dogs, sometimes I avoided the squares in the neighbourhood and went for a walk on other routes at times that had many dogs in the squares. And he loved it. I had to keep in mind that we had a way back whenever we ventured into new paths and I always managed to keep a tolerable limit for it. The signs he gave me after the walk that this one was a little too long or that it took too much effort were drinking a lot of water when we arrived (to know this you must be aware of how much your dog normally drinks), and lie down in the parts of the house with ceramic floors, cooler, with the belly down, to rest (I've never had a heated floor in Brazil, until now). On normal days he would lie down next to me, and he didn't always drink water when we arrived (it also depended on when he drank water before leaving).

Dogs are very partners with the owner, so if yours has stopped, respect that. I see tutors who don't even respect when the dog stops to sniff trees and posts and pee. It takes a dose of sensitivity to have a dog or cat. Even greater sensitivity than necessary to have a child, as a 5-year-old child already communicates with indisputable clarity about their physiological needs, fears, etc., even though some emotionally immature parents are negligent in listening to and respecting the children's needs.

This text is already quite long, I will soon post a text with similarities and differences that I notice between having dogs or cats and having children.

If you have questions, leave your contribution on my Ko-Fi profile and ask the question in the comments.

🇬🇧 Advantages and disadvantages of living in the interior of Brazil

Advantages and disadvantages of living in cities in the interior of Brazil is the theme of this text. I never lived in cities with less than three hundred thousand inhabitants. This is a medium-sized city for brazilian standards. I visited many smaller cities traveling. My main reference is medium-sized cities, but the references I have to smaller cities are part of this text too. In the next text I speak of the advantages and disadvantages of living in the countryside. Include the blog in your favorite feed reader or follow by email so you don't miss a thing.

Advantages of living in cities in the interior of Brazil

    • In general, the smaller the city, the lower the cost of living. There are exceptions, such as small towns with great tourist appeal.
    • The sense of security tends to be greater in smaller cities, although violence exists even in povoados (places inhabited by a few tens or a few hundred people in the countryside, with a commercial structure and usually a school, and without self-government. The mayor responsible for the povoado is the one responsible for the municipality of which that povoado is part).
    • There are popular cultural events that are usually forgotten or unknown in capitals, and some happen so close to us that we cannot ignore them, such as the June festivities in Caruaru and Campina Grande or the party of the catopês in Montes Claros, which takes place in the month of August.
    • If the city is close to a capital and the roads are good or there are regular and direct commercial flights, it is possible to travel easily to enjoy the benefits of the capitals.

Disadvantages of living in the interior of Brazil

    • If you wear something very different, many people are staring as if you were a being from another planet.
    • The smaller the city, the less leisure options there are.
    • Also, the variety of universities is less than in capitals.
    • The smaller the city, the greater the chances of finding your ex.
    • Gossip. Once I went out at night with my brother in the city where I was born and the next day in the morning someone had already gone to tell my mother that saw me at the pizzeria with a boyfriend. (My brother lived with my father). And the city is not even small!!!
    • Very little variety of restaurants. Where I was born there are basically Portuguese restaurants, pizzerias, steakhouses and buffet restaurants per kilo (something that apparently only exists in Brazil or maybe exists outside as a Brazilian initiative). In Uberlândia there were also Chinese restaurants and a Japanese restaurant when I lived there. Not every capital has much more than that.
    • Perhaps because of gossip, people's creativity and their desire to do something different is inversely proportional to the size of the city. The smaller the city, the less people put creativity into practice in all aspects of life.

Follow the blog and my profiles on social networks so as not to miss the next texts and comment on your experiences about living in small cities in your country.

🇬🇧 Path

I have lived in 4 cities so far and today I am going to talk about some interesting points about each one.

I was born in Montes Claros, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It is not a tourist city, but it does receive some commercial flights from Belo Horizonte, which means that if you leave another state you have to make a connection in BH to get there. There is also road transport. But the roads are terrible. I never went there by plane, so I can't say which is the best option. If you are or have been, tell me!

In Montes Claros, the parties and restaurants usually focus on the so-called “avenida sanitária”. Lately it seems that some good restaurants have appeared outside that small stretch of Avenida Deputado Esteves Rodrigues (which has the ugly nickname I mentioned above).

The city currently has 2 malls. As I remember it has 2 parks (municipal park and Sapucaia park).

The people are very hospitable and the local hotel websites are terrible. The last time I went there I stayed at the home of a young medical student through Couchsurfing and I loved the experience. We even had a meeting of the few members of the city's Couchsurfing at the mall!

The most typical dish of local cuisine is rice with pequi and carne de sol. Montes Claros sun meat (carne de sol) is NOT what gauchos call beef jerky. The carne de sol is also served as a snack, in fried cubes, often accompanied by manioc, in the bars. In the city it is also possible to find pequi liquor, pequi oil, etc. The oil helps to give pequi taste to rice for us who live far away. I was sent one once, but it “froze” in Curitiba at room temperature in the summer, outside the refrigerator. 😂😂😂😂 I had to leave the bottle in the sun every day to use a little bit that melted.

A very beautiful place to go is also the Pampulha lagoon, which is on the way between the airport and the city center.

And if you have good contacts or rent a car, tours of the region's farms can yield beautiful photos. I, in particular, love the cerrado images. Of course it is beautiful to see green vegetation like here in the south, but the landscape of the cerrado is unique.

The local architecture also enchants me. The cathedral is a beautiful church. The oldest houses in the center, close to the mother church, on João Pinheiro street, where my paternal grandmother lived for many years, bocaiúva street… and to give a contrast, a stroll through the neighborhoods São Luiz, Melo and Todos os Santos (I would include Ibituruna too, if you are in the mood), with more modern houses and some beautiful ones.

Uberlândia, in turn, is more accustomed to business tourism. The city is better structured to receive tourists and receives more commercial flights daily. The road that connects the city to São Paulo is also quite decent, so arriving by land is relatively quiet.

In gastronomy what catches my attention in Uberlândia are the pamonhas. In Montes Claros I only knew sweet pamonhas without filling. In Uberlândia and throughout the “triângulo mineiro”, even Patos de Minas, there are salted pamonhas and stuffed with cheese, pepperoni and more that creativity demands.  😋

In college, the interesting places to go out were in the center and it was very safe to walk around the center. I lived near the central terminal and sometimes came back from the club, at the other end of the center, on foot with my friends and it was quite safe. I cannot guarantee that it remains so. Twenty years go by.

”In my time” the city only had one mall that you can call a mall: the Center Shopping.

And there is the Sabiá park (which I never went to). And restaurants / bars have some good ones in various parts of the city.

The city's public transport system is integrated and is better than Curitiba's, mainly because it has a central terminal and the way the central terminal works (you can leave the terminal for up to half an hour without paying for another ticket). I don't know if it's the same at the other terminals in the city.

Porto Alegre is a city that I don't recommend visiting in the summer. Most people living in Porto Alegre leave the capital in January. Only the ones who need to work remain in the city. Anyone who can (middle class and above)  go to the coast because the city is unbearably hot! I would recommend escaping to the Serra Gaúcha in the summer. Few people, because it is out of season, and a super pleasant temperature. But Porto Alegre is a very beautiful city, with parks that are worth a visit like the Parcão and the Parque da Redenção (go on a Sunday. It is full of people around the park and there are craft and food stands on the street in front of the  arc). The gaucho barbecue is very famous. I'm not super fan of beef, so my opinion about it doesn't matter so much, but it's not bad. There are also “galeto” in the region.  I don't know how to explain it, I never ate, but is a young chicken. My gastronomic experience in Porto was eating steak from a very good restaurant close to home, acarajés from the park Redenção (on Sundays), and pizzas. Besides, I usually made food at home.

Watching the sunset on the gasometer is mandatory. Also in the central region there is the house of culture Mario Quintana, the municipal market and the “most beautiful street in the world” (Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho), in the Independência neighborhood.

The most “tourist” regions of the city, I believe, are two. Cidade Baixa, which has many bars and the famous Opinion bar, where, “in my time”, all the international metal shows took place, except the Live’n’louder festival, which was at Gigantinho. The neighborhood is also very close to the Grêmio and Inter stadiums. The profile of the local bars is very popular for students, some “dirty feet” and more alternative bars. And there is the other region, for those who want something more bourgeois, which is the Moinhos de Vento neighborhood, where most of the good hotels and good restaurants are located in the capital. Each of the 2 parks I mentioned is in the vicinity of one of these neighborhoods.

In Curitiba, you can take the tour bus and visit the main sights of the city. Of the points in the tour bus itinerary my favorites are the barigui park, the lookout tower (Oi tower) which is close by and has a beautiful view of the city and the botanical garden.

A cute spot that is worth visiting outside the tourist bus route is the Japan Square. It is also worth visiting the Largo da Ordem, where there was a craft fair on Sunday morning. Also include a tour of museums, such as the Oscar Niemeyer museum, known as the eye museum; Guido Viaro museum and a red museum at the beginning of street Desembargador Westphalen, in the center. The last two are always free. Niemeyer is paid, but has a free day.

Most of the good restaurants are in the neighborhoods Batel, Água verde and Bigorrilho (also called Champagnat). Most of the good hotels are in Batel.  The typical dish of the region is barreado, a shredded cooked meat with flour, sooo boring (for my taste, which I prefer more spicy and rich in flavors).

The public transport system is very good and integrated. Once I tried to visit the main sights of the city by taking a normal bus with a friend, but I do not recommend it, because in one of the stretches we had to take an “Interbairros” line that took a huge turn to get where we wanted.

🇧🇷 O caminho

Eu, particularmente, amo as imagens do cerrado.

A arquitetura local também me encanta.

Ver o pôr do sol no gasômetro é obrigatório.

Wesphalen, no centro.

🇬🇧 Fruits and Brazilian Desserts

Today I'm going to talk about a topic that I spent some time without writing about. Food. Mainly about fruits and desserts common in Brazil. The desserts I will try to speak only of the typical ones of the country, but as I live in a mixed country, full of people of the most varied origins, it may be that some of these sweets are typical of another place and adapted here.

One of the rarest fruits in the world is abundant in Brazil: jabuticaba. And we have many other typical fruits in several regions. I'm not sure what typical fruits in the south of the country would be, as the ones I normally see are common in temperate countries. But across the country we have, among others, pequi in the cerrado (I already mentioned it in a specific text), soursop, umbu, acerola, cocoa, passion fruit, pitanga, cashew, avocado (which we normally eat with sugar for breakfast and not salty as  in guacamoles), pineapple, kiwi, pear, apple, pitaya, guava, peach, nectarine, pine cone (or earl's fruit), various species of oranges and lemons, mandarin (or tangerine or mimosa, depending on the region you are in),  strawberries, plum, persimmon, papaya, coconut, sour coconut (very common in the cerrado), jambo and many others. In a country of continental dimensions, we have fruits from different climates and vegetation.  And many dishes that use these fruits.

In the state of Minas Gerais, in addition to the dulce de leche in different consistencies, we have many sweets of various fruits. Canjica (dessert with milk and white corn) and sweet rice (also called milk rice) are also common. Most fruits become desserts in syrup. Guava can become guava in syrup, creamy guava (like a jelly) or cut guava. It can also become juice or ice cream. Papaya is eaten with sugar for breakfast, but it can turn sweet from papaya rings in syrup, when the fruit is green, papaya candy or juice, in addition to being part of more elaborate recipes. Pequi, as I said in the other text, is usually eaten with rice for lunch and dinner, but it can become ice cream. The sour coconut is a delight to make juice, popsicles and ice cream. Corn becomes mush (sweet or salted, in some regions. Commonly sweet) and also popsicles, ice cream, cake, and many other delicacies. From the sugar cane, the juice is extracted, which is drunk pure and cold (or, in some places, mixed with lemon and other fruits, but I prefer pure), and can also be transformed into rapadura and batida (which is a very sweet  similar to rapadura, very tasty). Figs can also become a syrup or candied fruit candy. The coconut becomes varied sweets, juice (very good) and ice cream. The pineapple can become juice, popsicle, ice cream, sweet in syrup, be part of pies and cakes, among other options. The pineapples in the city of Monte Alegre are famous for being very sweet. Here in Curitiba the pineapples taste too soft. These are some of the most common sweets in Minas.

I really like to consume fruits in the form of juices, ice cream and sweets, and also in some pies, like my apple pie, which has no dough, like the American one. Mineiro desserts are very good for those who like very sugary sweets. The sweet mush is an exception, as it has a milder flavour.

In other states we have sweets with a softer sweetness. For juices, I recommend trying umbu, cocoa, coconut and other regional fruits. When thinking about ice cream, my first choice is to take açaí, a fruit sorbet that comes from the north of the country, mixed with guaraná syrup. In the north of the country people usually eat açaí as an accompaniment for lunch or dinner, not as dessert as we do in the south and southeast. My favorite popsicle is sour coconut, but I never saw it marketed. I did it at home, in childhood, preparing the fruit juice and freezing. But I don't know where to buy sour tart outside Montes Claros. If you know, comment!! 🤩

In addition to the sweets from Minas Gerais, Pernambuco and Bahians are my favorites. Baianos do wonders with coconut. The typical sweets and cakes from Pernambuco, such as the Souza Leão cake and the bolo de rolo, are an extraordinary experience. Here in the south it is possible to find bolo de rolo recently, but few are like the ones I tasted in Recife, where the dough is so thin that we hardly notice its presence. Some here look more swirling, with a thinner dough, and you can really taste the dough, which makes the experience frustrating for those who have already eaten real bolo de rolo.

Fruits are also part of the coverage of some sweet pizzas (pizza is something typical of Italy, but sweet pizza is something very Brazilian).

The breakfast in Brazil is very abundant, with breads, cakes, cheeses, cookies, coffee, milk, jams, guava, ham, juices and other delicacies according to the taste of each family.  Many include fresh fruit, which we also find in hotels, for breakfast.

🇧🇷 Frutas e doces brasileiros

🇬🇧 Music and other preferences

In Brazil, although we have some great classical and opera composers such as Chiquinha Gonzaga, Carlos Gomes and Heitor Villa Lobos, there is no tradition linked to classical music or at least I was not part of it. I studied ballet, piano and flute in childhood, as I see it is normal for children from developed countries to study, but I was never encouraged to do so. At the time I lived in front of the music conservatory in Montes Claros and it is possible that children's curiosity led me to insist to be part of that universe, but the piano, which I really liked and like, I never had one at home to rehearse and  so I ended up giving up on the course. The others were due to lack of interest. I also studied acoustic guitar in my teens and I have already told in another text why I stopped.

For a long time, my musical references were the popular rhythms. Until I got to know metal and get closer to classical music. And when I went to live in capitals, opportunities arose to have contact with the opera and a whole universe that I had known little before.

Musically I listen to a lot more metal than any other type of music, but in a show it is very easy to identify myself. I remember that at the first Nightwish show I went to, a young man from Santa Catarina traveled to Porto Alegre and found me in line. We knew each other through Orkut. In the middle of the sea of people in black, I was wearing a cropped blue shirt cut diagonally. 😊 And it is rare that I adopt a look that comes out of black from head to toe. I like color, especially in Curitiba where the weather is almost always gray.

As I have worked with fashion all my life, my quality references for clothing also don't match the classic profile of metal fans. I have already walked through some stores that sell to this audience and I was horrified by the low quality. I often say that I am a “pink metalhead” because of how picky I am with clothes. So, I don't fit into labels, but until today I have lived well, making friends with people of very different profiles, with different affinities.

Nowadays I hear a lot of classical music, jazz, and almost nothing about pop. When selecting films I also try to analyze the script more, looking for films that add value to my life. Biography films appeal to me as much as books on this subject. I like individual physical exercises, gym, dog walking, cycling. And video games, because I can spend hours playing games and at the same time being close to my pets and enjoying the company of loved ones. Dancing also pleases me a lot.

Even if you don't share all my preferences, if you are looking for continuous improvement, like me, you will find something on this blog that has value, because my experiences are related to this tireless search for inner growth. But if you are content with little, you will be angry.

Me conhecia do Orkut.

Dançar também me agrada bastante.
