🇬🇧 Typical foods from Montes Claros, Brazil

I have already talked about typical dishes of all countries and also of the Brazilian states. Today I will talk about the typical foods of the 4 Brazilian cities in which I lived. A text for each. Montes Claros, Minas Gerais

The typical main dish is rice with pequi and carne de sol. Don't expect the carne de sol from Montes Claros to be similar to that of other Brazilian regions.

The carne de sol also accompanies pieces of cassava in a very common snack in the bars of the city.

Pequi, in turn, can be found in the form of liqueur, oil, ice cream, etc., so you can have the taste of this typical cerrado fruit at home and do whatever you want. I've tried pequi in other cities and Montes Claros is my favourite because it's easier to find very succulent pequi.

Another dish that is not exactly typical, because it has an ingredient that is not from the region, but I have never seen it outside, is surubim in sauce. They are pieces of surubim, a fish also called "pintado", in sauce. I prefer fish fillet because I don't like dealing with fish bones, but the dish is very tasty and the fish doesn't have many bones.

Two other foods I've never seen in other regions are the beaten rapadura (which I love) and a solid cheese-like requeijão (also very good). The beaten rapadura, despite the beaten name suggests an alcoholic drink, is lighter than the common rapadura and, if I'm not mistaken, is made up of the foam that forms in the pots during the production of the rapadura. The solid requeijão resembles a white cheese and has a very unique flavour. Great for use on sandwiches and salads.

I was once sent pequi oil at Christmas and I like it, you can create a lot, but Curitiba is much colder than Montes Claros, even in summer, and I had to put pequi oil in the sun for a few hours to use every day, because it is “frozen” in the package, at room temperature. 😅 With the sun, it thawed out enough that you can use it once. The upside is that it lasted for months. After a while, I had patience and left it in the sun all day, moving the package so that it was always in the sun, then I transferred the contents to a jar where I could collect the oil with a spoon, as we do with butter when making a cake.
