What is a plus size model?

I'm Nycka Nunes, digital and cultural nomad, and I work as a visual artist, fine art photographer and stylist, in addition to creating content on several platforms (this blog and social networks. Links in the sidebar). I have been working in the fashion industry since childhood.

In this text I will talk specifically about plus size models. Plus size is NOT necessarily a fat person. For example, I've always been skinny and my hips measure 102 cm. If I were a model, with that hip measurement I would be a plus size model. Plus size is a person that we can more clearly identify the physical type, if we compare two people with the same hip measurement, for example. Just look at the person and we have a clear notion of the physical type, which is almost always confirmed when we take their measurements. Among traditional models it is more difficult to identify this.

A lot of people see Gisele Bündchen as curvy, for example, but if you compare her waist-hip line with mine, she's straight as a ruler. As when photographing she usually creates curves with her body, she creates this impression of being curvy. Some styling tricks can also give the impression that her body has a different shape.

And here comes the reason why I am very opposed to the use of plus size models on catwalks and in photographs and videos from online stores. Catwalk is for showing the clothes. With all the models having similar bodies it's easy to identify which body types each outfit looks good on. With the presentation of different body types, it is easy to see if the clothes fit well on that person, but it is difficult to identify whether the same clothes would fit well on someone with a different body type or even on a person with the same body type and a different measure of bust, for example (bust is not evaluated to identify physical type. I have already explained this in more detail in another text).

Brands that want to show that they dress different body types should do so through advertising and marketing campaigns, including working with content creators and excluding the runway. To be a model without having the standard measurements of a runway model, there is already a commercial model career, which accepts people of different physical types and ages.
