🇬🇧 Typical foods and drinks of the Brazilian parties in June

Today we will talk about the typical foods and drinks of the Brazilian holidays in June.

Starting with the simplest part, the drinks: the most common drinks are called quentão throughout the country, but in the south it's a sugary drink that takes wine in preparation. I love it! In the rest of the country, a quentão made from cachaça and ginger is common. Although this quentão is very common in the city where I was born, I have never drank. Both are worth trying and finding out which one you like best.

Chimarrão, a drink consumed all year round in Rio Grande do Sul, also pairs well with the cold climate of the period.

As for the food, let's start with the king of June parties, corn. It is present at the parties boiled or roasted, in popcorn, pamonha, hominy, curau, corn cakes and cornmeal cakes (cornmeal cake is usually a drier cake), and also in savoury dishes where it is usually a secondary ingredient (different recipes of rice and risotto, farofa, with meat, etc.).

Since June is a cold month in Brazil, soups and broths such as pine nut soup, green broth, among others, are also common at June holidays.

The apple of love is a typical candy. It is an apple covered with a sugary syrup, and sometimes with many jams, which gives a more crunchy texture to the skin of the fruit, served skewered on a toothpick.

Another ever-present dessert is rice pudding, which is similar to white corn hominy, but with rice instead of corn.

Savoury paçocas (dried meat and cassava flour) and sweet ones (with peanuts) are also part of the menu. Peanuts are also present in Pé-de-moleque and other sweets of the rich Brazilian cuisine.

For house parties, the rules of creativity and dishes can be part of the decor whenever the guest is creative enough or wants to amaze and research to find out how to achieve this.

Brazilian cuisine shows all its richness during the June holidays and tourists from other countries should try to visit the country during the month of June and participate in these holidays. There are cities where such parties are open to the public for free and in many others there are parties that sell invitations, as well as celebrations in schools and homes of Brazilian families.

If you want to get a taste of the best Brazilian parties without leaving home, follow this blog and our social networks and at some point I'll share some recipes.

🇬🇧 Juhannus and brazilian June festivals

Some time ago I was curious to know if in other countries there are parties equivalent to the Brazilian June festivals. In the last few days I saw several posts about Juhannus in Finland, and researching more, I found that, although the way of partying is different, the reason for the party is practically the same. Wikipedia says that Juhannus refers to St. John.

In Brazil, in the month of June, we celebrate some Catholic saints, with emphasis on St. Anthony (13), St. John (24) and St. Peter (29). Brazil has been a secular country for at least 33 years, but the Catholic religion is predominant in popular culture and affects some holidays and celebrations in the country.

The way to celebrate the date is usually to dance the “quadrilha” around a bonfire, wearing country clothes, full of patches and scraps. This is the most common form in schools and in family celebrations with children. In my hometown, some leisure clubs celebrated the saints I mentioned by making a big party at night, with bonfires, music (usually forró all night), dancing (not the quadrille, but the forró), and plenty of typical food, for members and people who paid for the ticket. Churches often hold festivals and also celebrate with music and typical foods in abundance. I'll talk more about the typical foods and drinks of the June parties in Brazil in the next post. If you want to tell what food and drinks are typical of these festivities in your country, use the comments for that. I will love to know!

St. Anthony is the matchmaker saint and the day before is Valentine's Day in Brazil. The month usually dedicated to weddings is May, when the winter chill is just beginning. Brazilian brides love to get married in low-cut and sleeveless dresses. I know Finnish Juhannus also has magics related to love relationships, and finding your love. In Brazil, this part is celebrated at the beginning of the month in the St. Anthony festivities, and we also have magics to attract love and marriage.

I know that in Finland people celebrate Juhannus with family and friends in their country houses, outside the cities, or take the opportunity to relax, also outside the city. In Brazil, we go to places where we can party, dance, and taste the delicious typical foods of the season, not only with friends and family, but with many other people. Perhaps because of the Latin influence (mainly Portuguese and Italian), few dates in Brazil are predominantly celebrated with the family. Usually just Christmas and birthday. Brazilians love an agglomeration.

According to videos I saw of Finns commenting on the date, Juhannus is also celebrated with dances around a bonfire. Visually it's a little different (see photos on my Instagram), but learning about Juhannus and thinking about the similarities with the Brazilian June festivals killed my curiosity that I mentioned at the beginning of the text.

🇧🇷 Juhannus e festas juninas brasileiras

🇬🇧 Self-development and perfectionism

Cultural nomadism has to do with self-knowledge, personal development, with breaking one's own limits, for a positive perfectionism.

Positive perfectionism? Yes. The quest for perfection motivated by the belief that we are capable of doing better, of learning from mistakes, of getting closer to perfection by accepting our mistakes and learning from them.

For this, knowing how to give and receive feedback is important. It is necessary to differentiate a criticism coming from an incompetent and envious person from a person committed to excellence, with this positive perfectionism. The second is capable of teaching, the first is an expert in criticising. He doesn't know how to do anything, but criticises as if he were the wisest person in the world.

In a world where communication through social networks is common, and interactions with people we don't know personally happen routinely, it is even more important to know how to differentiate. The attitude of just waiting for praise is contrary to the attitude of the cultural nomad or anyone seeking personal development, as is the attitude of calling any criticism “hate”.

Technology has shaken the way we interact, it has opened borders, it helps us to have contact with a new world.  Everyone can choose to be afraid of this “new” world (and in this case I recommend not using social networks) or use these “new” features to improve the precious jewel that is your life.

A cultural nomad knows his value and seeks to increase it through continuous development, a mindset of innovation and improving his own talents, building a differentiated personal brand.

🇧🇷 Desenvolvimento pessoal e perfeccionismo

🇬🇧 What prevents you from going out alone?

The text today is for everyone who doesn't usually go out alone to parties, bars, restaurants, movies, trips, or anything else. People dependent on company for fun. The reasons can be countless, but you are limiting your life and creating addictive relationships with friends, partner, etc.  That doesn't sound very healthy to me.

I watched a video of a woman who got divorced and, as friends used to do go out in couples, she ended up without companions to go out and she didn't go out for years, and the times she tried to go out to dinner alone, she felt judged even by the waiters.

I'm not going to judge divorced women who close themselves off from the world, who don't adapt to the situation. I just say that if you are in this situation or are afraid to go out alone (or alone), travel alone, etc., you are missing out on countless opportunities to be happy and enjoy life. This blog has many tips for those who don't want to miss opportunities for fear, prejudice, feeling of loneliness or any other reason.

Nomads often have to do things on their own, for being new to a place and not yet having friends there. The big difference is that this feeling of loneliness, even if it happens, does not bother us because we know it is temporary and that we are interesting people and soon we will change that circumstance, soon we will find people with similar interests.

Will they judge you? Look... if you're really involved in having fun, you won't notice anyone judging you. If you leave already afraid of what others will think, you won't enjoy whatever you try to do, because you'll be too busy imagining every look in your direction as judgment. Stop being stupid and go live!

I've already commented here, but it was at the very beginning of the blog and I gained thousands of readers afterwards, so I repeat: when I moved to another city for the first time, my mother used to say that a woman who goes out alone is a whore. And I had to have lunch alone the first Monday in the new town. So as not to feel vulnerable or look around, I took a book to the restaurant. The book was my company. And I ended up noticing that many women were having lunch alone there and that certainly my mother's view of women going out alone was prejudiced and limited. From then on I gained confidence to go to the movies alone (if it's one of those movies with long queues it's much better to go alone, as it's easier to find a place just for you than places together for you and whoever else is with you), trips, shows...

Have you ever been to a concert by the Brazilian band Sepultura? They are famous all over the world. It was one of my most memorable concert experiences that I went alone. I've already commented on how it was here on the blog. Read the ancient texts if you want to imagine. But I recommend that you live the experience when you have the opportunity. Even if their music isn't your favourite style.

It's a huge waste of time to be stuck with limiting beliefs we've inherited from our family. It is a great waste of time not to do something for lack of company.

Another point that the woman in the video commented on was the lack of someone to talk to, to share the experience with. At several shows I went to, I talked to people in line. About movies and anything you don't have anyone to share with, it's worth using social media and exchanging ideas with people who also saw that movie or went to that restaurant, museum, whatever. What doesn't count is putting lack of companionship as responsible for choosing your fear over choosing to live. No more excuses!  If this pandemic didn't make you want to live, to stop being ruled by irrational fears and prejudices, nothing else can!

🇬🇧 The mouth and the lipstick

Have you noticed that in recent years many women with full lips are avoiding red and dark coloured lipsticks? As much as the lips are covered in masks lately, it's worth thinking about them.

Two things I almost never use are nail polishes and lipsticks in subdued colours. Lipsticks I really don't like. Nail polishes from time to time I like to do French nails, although mine if I only apply a transparent base has practically the same effect.

But some time ago I read a mulatto writer commenting that she was always ashamed to wear red lipstick because it drew too much attention to her thick lips. And we see other celebrities like J.Lo and Kim Kardashian who also seem to avoid drawing attention to their mouths most of the time.

Have you been doing the same? How do you feel about your mouth? How do you feel about communicating with other people? What about your sexuality and sensuality? Or have you been using discreet lipsticks just to imitate celebrities who do the same without thinking about what it communicates?

Personal style is about thinking about what each choice conveys. And this thinking also applies to those with thinner lips. Lack of that thinking is synonymous with lack of style. Want to know more, hire me as your personal stylist.

🇬🇧 Tips for those who want to live in Brazil

Are you moving to Brazil or are you thinking of living in the country?  This post has some useful tips.

The official language of Brazil is Portuguese. I recommend studying a little before moving to the country. People of higher cultural and financial level usually speak English, but don't expect a supermarket attendant to speak the language. Many language schools in the country offer Portuguese courses for foreigners in case you ignore my recommendation. Brazil is a country of continental dimensions and each region has peculiarities in its spoken language, which, as in other languages, has differences in relation to the cultured language standard, the one that Brazilians learn at school and you, foreigners, learn in courses  of Portuguese. The difference in relation to Portuguese from Portugal is also remarkable.

How to find a job in Brazil? Surely LinkedIn can be very helpful. If you work on your personal brand, going directly to the websites of companies that have your profile is also an option. There are also numerous recruitment company websites and job portals such as vagas.com.br that may be useful for some.

How to find out if there is field in Brazil for your business idea? It will depend on what your area of expertise is, but the internet has a multitude of resources that can be very useful in this research. The country also has a plethora of consulting companies that can be useful in refining your business plan. For companies that sponsor this blog (annual sponsorship) I can also offer some tips for entering the Brazilian market.

Where to search for properties to rent or buy? Two major real estate portals with both options throughout Brazil are www.zapimoveis.com.br and https://www.imovelweb.com.br, both in Portuguese.

To get an idea of the cost of living, numbeo.com is a good reference, but I also recommend monitoring the prices for renting or buying property on the websites mentioned above, to get an idea of housing costs within the standards you expect.

This blog encourages people to migrate to different countries or cities for cultural enrichment, and encourages this change to be made legally and in order to contribute to the economic growth of their destination, in addition to improving their own quality of life. Knowing the culture of your destination and respecting it is an important step in the adaptation process.

🇬🇧 Tips for those who want to live in Sweden

Are you moving to Sweden or are you thinking of living in the country? This post has some useful tips.

How to find a job in Sweden? Surely LinkedIn can be very helpful. If you work on your personal brand, going straight to the websites of companies that have your profile is also an option.

How to find out if there is a field in Sweden for your business idea? It will depend on what your area of expertise is, but the internet has a multitude of resources that can be very useful in this research.

Where to search for rental properties? I suggest thelocal.se, with English search.

And properties to buy, where to search?  I suggest the Hemnet app. It's in Swedish, but nothing a translator won't help.

To study Swedish in Stockholm, visit https://www.folkuniversitetet.se/in-english/swedish-courses/swedish-in-stockholm/ for more information. The website https://studyinsweden.se/moving-to-sweden/learn-swedish also has information about online Swedish courses and face-to-face courses in different cities.

To get an idea of the cost of living, numbeo.com is a good reference, but I also recommend monitoring the prices for renting or buying property on the websites mentioned above, to get an idea of housing costs within the standards you expect.

🇬🇧 Apps for nomads to make new friends

This week I read a survey where they evaluated about 60 countries from the expatriates’ point of view and classified them according to some criteria. You can access the survey at https://www.internations.org/expat-insider/2021/best-and-worst-places-for-expats-40108

Some countries are admittedly difficult to make new friends, and this was one of the factors assessed. A factor that contributed to some countries having a bad position in the ranking.

Each person’s experiences in a place tend to be different, as well as their motivations. Italy was ranked as the second worst country in this survey and I know people who love Italy, have lived there for many years and have no intention of leaving the country.

In another text I will talk about the motivations to move to a new place. Today I want to talk about applications that can be useful for meeting new people when we move to another city or another country, as this helps a lot in adapting.

First I’ll comment on some that I’ve already tested.

I've been using the internet since 1999, so a lot of things I've used to meet people, even long before social media, doesn't even exist anymore or isn't as used as it was twenty years ago. I won’t talk about those.

So, the first suggestion is Couchsurfing. I used this application after moving to Curitiba and some people met regularly in the city, often taking travelers who were in the city. The main goal of the CS is that people can exchange ideas with natives when they travel, since the natives always know the city better, knowing interesting things to do that go beyond those traditional tourist routes.  And, in this exchange of information, it is possible to stay at the platform members’ home or accept travelers at your home. Hence the name Couchsurfing. Each person offers their sofa or guest room for a traveler to stay without paying anything, but preferably with a cultural exchange. It is not mandatory to host or be a guest. The cool thing is that we can meet people who like to travel and are more open to new friendships in the place where we are living.  I haven't used the platform in a while, but I recommend it.

Following, social networks. Finding Facebook groups of expatriates or even groups of natives with common interests is possible. It is also possible to find people who live in that city where you are through other networks such as YouTube, Instagram and Tiktok. And from common interests, opportunities can arise to have a coffee or take a walk in some interesting place in the city and start what can become a friendship.

The third suggestion is an application called Tandem, to practice languages. I suggest this for those who are in a country with a different language and for those who are studying a language to go and live in a certain country where this is the official language. It is an application to practice languages, but there is the option to mark the profile if you are interested in meeting people in person. And from this mutual support with languages, a friendship can emerge.

The next suggestions I never used, but they seem to be valid ways to meet people and start friendships.

  • EatWith: a platform to gather people for dinner. I registered there a few years ago, but I didn't find anything happening in Curitiba, so I can't say how the experience is. Maybe it works better for big cities (in Brazil, I always saw activities in São Paulo). Perhaps it has changed and there are people from more places nowadays. Seems interesting.
  • Pingle: I haven't used it yet. The proposal is to bring people together to do something together. If I got it right it could be dinner, a bike ride through a park, various things not necessarily related to food. I discovered this app in a video about Sweden, so I don't know the geographical scope of it either. The proposal is interesting.
  • TravellingSpoon: It also revolves around food, but here you can take classes on how to prepare something and even a tour of the market for the chef to give tips on buying the ingredients, in addition to the meal.  A chance to meet other people who enjoy cooking.

From a global perspective, these are my suggestions at the moment. Getting out of the virtual world and finding ways to meet people in the real world on courses, at the gym or taking a walk with your dog around the neighbourhood are also options.

If you have other suggestions, in apps or occasions in your city or country that people are more open to meeting other people and making friends, comment below.

And don’t forget to follow my profiles on social networks and enter my Telegram channel to be notified of new texts and receive extra tips.
