🇬🇧 The mouth and the lipstick

Have you noticed that in recent years many women with full lips are avoiding red and dark coloured lipsticks? As much as the lips are covered in masks lately, it's worth thinking about them.

Two things I almost never use are nail polishes and lipsticks in subdued colours. Lipsticks I really don't like. Nail polishes from time to time I like to do French nails, although mine if I only apply a transparent base has practically the same effect.

But some time ago I read a mulatto writer commenting that she was always ashamed to wear red lipstick because it drew too much attention to her thick lips. And we see other celebrities like J.Lo and Kim Kardashian who also seem to avoid drawing attention to their mouths most of the time.

Have you been doing the same? How do you feel about your mouth? How do you feel about communicating with other people? What about your sexuality and sensuality? Or have you been using discreet lipsticks just to imitate celebrities who do the same without thinking about what it communicates?

Personal style is about thinking about what each choice conveys. And this thinking also applies to those with thinner lips. Lack of that thinking is synonymous with lack of style. Want to know more, hire me as your personal stylist.

🇬🇧 Tips for those who want to live in Brazil

Are you moving to Brazil or are you thinking of living in the country?  This post has some useful tips.

The official language of Brazil is Portuguese. I recommend studying a little before moving to the country. People of higher cultural and financial level usually speak English, but don't expect a supermarket attendant to speak the language. Many language schools in the country offer Portuguese courses for foreigners in case you ignore my recommendation. Brazil is a country of continental dimensions and each region has peculiarities in its spoken language, which, as in other languages, has differences in relation to the cultured language standard, the one that Brazilians learn at school and you, foreigners, learn in courses  of Portuguese. The difference in relation to Portuguese from Portugal is also remarkable.

How to find a job in Brazil? Surely LinkedIn can be very helpful. If you work on your personal brand, going directly to the websites of companies that have your profile is also an option. There are also numerous recruitment company websites and job portals such as vagas.com.br that may be useful for some.

How to find out if there is field in Brazil for your business idea? It will depend on what your area of expertise is, but the internet has a multitude of resources that can be very useful in this research. The country also has a plethora of consulting companies that can be useful in refining your business plan. For companies that sponsor this blog (annual sponsorship) I can also offer some tips for entering the Brazilian market.

Where to search for properties to rent or buy? Two major real estate portals with both options throughout Brazil are www.zapimoveis.com.br and https://www.imovelweb.com.br, both in Portuguese.

To get an idea of the cost of living, numbeo.com is a good reference, but I also recommend monitoring the prices for renting or buying property on the websites mentioned above, to get an idea of housing costs within the standards you expect.

This blog encourages people to migrate to different countries or cities for cultural enrichment, and encourages this change to be made legally and in order to contribute to the economic growth of their destination, in addition to improving their own quality of life. Knowing the culture of your destination and respecting it is an important step in the adaptation process.

Are you moving to Sweden or are you thinking of living in the country? This post has some useful tips.

How to find a job in Sweden? Surely LinkedIn can be very helpful. If you work on your personal brand, going straight to the websites of companies that have your profile is also an option.

How to find out if there is a field in Sweden for your business idea? It will depend on what your area of expertise is, but the internet has a multitude of resources that can be very useful in this research.

Where to search for rental properties? I suggest thelocal.se, with English search.

And properties to buy, where to search?  I suggest the Hemnet app. It's in Swedish, but nothing a translator won't help.

To study Swedish in Stockholm, visit https://www.folkuniversitetet.se/in-english/swedish-courses/swedish-in-stockholm/ for more information. The website https://studyinsweden.se/moving-to-sweden/learn-swedish also has information about online Swedish courses and face-to-face courses in different cities.

🇬🇧 Apps for nomads to make new friends

This week I read a survey where they evaluated about 60 countries from the expatriates’ point of view and classified them according to some criteria. You can access the survey at https://www.internations.org/expat-insider/2021/best-and-worst-places-for-expats-40108

Some countries are admittedly difficult to make new friends, and this was one of the factors assessed. A factor that contributed to some countries having a bad position in the ranking.

Each person’s experiences in a place tend to be different, as well as their motivations. Italy was ranked as the second worst country in this survey and I know people who love Italy, have lived there for many years and have no intention of leaving the country.

In another text I will talk about the motivations to move to a new place. Today I want to talk about applications that can be useful for meeting new people when we move to another city or another country, as this helps a lot in adapting.

First I’ll comment on some that I’ve already tested.

I've been using the internet since 1999, so a lot of things I've used to meet people, even long before social media, doesn't even exist anymore or isn't as used as it was twenty years ago. I won’t talk about those.

So, the first suggestion is Couchsurfing. I used this application after moving to Curitiba and some people met regularly in the city, often taking travelers who were in the city. The main goal of the CS is that people can exchange ideas with natives when they travel, since the natives always know the city better, knowing interesting things to do that go beyond those traditional tourist routes.  And, in this exchange of information, it is possible to stay at the platform members’ home or accept travelers at your home. Hence the name Couchsurfing. Each person offers their sofa or guest room for a traveler to stay without paying anything, but preferably with a cultural exchange. It is not mandatory to host or be a guest. The cool thing is that we can meet people who like to travel and are more open to new friendships in the place where we are living.  I haven't used the platform in a while, but I recommend it.

Following, social networks. Finding Facebook groups of expatriates or even groups of natives with common interests is possible. It is also possible to find people who live in that city where you are through other networks such as YouTube, Instagram and Tiktok. And from common interests, opportunities can arise to have a coffee or take a walk in some interesting place in the city and start what can become a friendship.

The third suggestion is an application called Tandem, to practice languages. I suggest this for those who are in a country with a different language and for those who are studying a language to go and live in a certain country where this is the official language. It is an application to practice languages, but there is the option to mark the profile if you are interested in meeting people in person. And from this mutual support with languages, a friendship can emerge.

The next suggestions I never used, but they seem to be valid ways to meet people and start friendships.

  • EatWith: a platform to gather people for dinner. I registered there a few years ago, but I didn't find anything happening in Curitiba, so I can't say how the experience is. Maybe it works better for big cities (in Brazil, I always saw activities in São Paulo). Perhaps it has changed and there are people from more places nowadays. Seems interesting.
  • Pingle: I haven't used it yet. The proposal is to bring people together to do something together. If I got it right it could be dinner, a bike ride through a park, various things not necessarily related to food. I discovered this app in a video about Sweden, so I don't know the geographical scope of it either. The proposal is interesting.
  • TravellingSpoon: It also revolves around food, but here you can take classes on how to prepare something and even a tour of the market for the chef to give tips on buying the ingredients, in addition to the meal.  A chance to meet other people who enjoy cooking.

From a global perspective, these are my suggestions at the moment. Getting out of the virtual world and finding ways to meet people in the real world on courses, at the gym or taking a walk with your dog around the neighbourhood are also options.

If you have other suggestions, in apps or occasions in your city or country that people are more open to meeting other people and making friends, comment below.

And don’t forget to follow my profiles on social networks and enter my Telegram channel to be notified of new texts and receive extra tips.

Então, a primeira sugestão é o Couchsurfing.

A proposta é interessante.
  • TravellingSpoon.

🇬🇧 Tips for those interested in living in Finland

Are you moving to Finland or are you thinking of living there? This post contains some helpful tips.

How to find a job in Finland? LinkedIn can certainly be very useful. If you work on your personal brand, going straight to the websites of companies that have your profile is also an option.

How to search if there is a field in Finland for your business idea? It will depend on your area of expertise, but the Internet has a multitude of resources that can be very helpful in this quest.

How do you know if it is easy to find work in your field in Finland? As well as being interesting to know Finnish and English, see https://www.ammattibarometri.fi to get an idea of the labor market situation in your area in different regions of the country.

Where to look for rental properties? I suggest vuokraovi.com, with searches in English and Finnish.

And the properties to buy, where to look?  I suggest the Oikotie app. It's in Finnish, but nothing a translator won't help. It is worth remembering that since the beginning of 2020, citizens of countries that are not part of the European Union and the European Economic Area need the authorisation of the Ministry of Defence to buy a house in the country. For apartments this authorisation is not required. The process of obtaining the authorisation takes about 3 weeks, according to information I have obtained from the Ministry of Defence itself.

To get an idea of the cost of living, the numbeo.com site is a good reference, but I also recommend keeping track of the rental or purchase prices of the properties on the sites mentioned above, to get an idea of the housing costs within the  standard you expect.

This blog encourages people to migrate to different countries or cities for cultural enrichment and encourages this change legally and with the aim of contributing to the economic growth of their destination, as well as improving their quality of life. Knowing the culture of your destination and respecting it is an important step in the adaptation process.

And speaking of culture, the University of Helsinki offers Finnish courses at a very affordable price. The website www.atasteoffinnish.fi offers a free Finnish course for beginners.

For advice on where to buy everything you need for your new life in Finland and information on how to get a visa, follow the blog and enter my Telegram channel to be notified of new texts.

🇬🇧 10 reasons for a foreigner to live in Brazil

  1. Brazilian culture is very rich and very diverse. Each region has its peculiarities, its histories, its value.
  2. Portuguese, the official language of Brazil, is one of the languages with the largest number of native speakers in the world. Certainly the size of the Brazilian population contributes a lot to this.
  3. Social networks are practically a necessity in today's world and in many of them the number of Brazilians is very high. In addition, even those Brazilians who are fluent in other languages often make comments in Portuguese on social media with foreign profiles. If you don’t speak portuguese you lose half of the content available on social network.
  4. Brazilian cuisine is very rich and very varied, like the country's culture.
  5. The Brazilian people are, in general, welcoming.
  6. Much of what the international media, and also the Brazilian media, say about the country are half truths that serve the political interests of the channels where such news is broadcast. Brazil has many problems, but it also has many qualities.
  7. For entrepreneurs and artists, being successful in Brazil is a big step towards being successful worldwide, as the Brazilian market is very large even for product categories that are not produced in the country in a relevant way, such as luxury goods.
  8. Brazil has numerous paradisiacal beaches and many natural beauties.
  9. Due to miscegenation, it is easy to find beautiful people in Brazil. It is not surprising that many internationally famous models are Brazilian.
  10. In Brazil, we have access to a considerable variety of products from all over the world, although some brands still do not send their products to the country, because they are unaware of the Brazilian market.
  11. You have already lived in Brazil? Do you have any extra reasons to add to this list?

🇧🇷 10 motivos para estrangeiros morarem no Brasil

🇬🇧 Let’s talk about the weather

Let's talk about the weather?

The weather forecast where I live has a maximum temperature of 24° C and a minimum of 5° C for today. 24° C is, in my perception, a pleasant temperature. But the variation of almost 20 degrees between the maximum and the minimum I feel uncomfortable. As I feel uncomfortable to live in places where winter and summer temperatures are very different in order to give a feeling of much heat in the summer and very cold in the winter.

Fortunately the world is big and has cities with very different climates. We can learn from these uncomfortable experiences and find a place with a more pleasant profile.

Those who have not yet left their hometown to live elsewhere may find it strange to think of the climate as a factor in choosing their destination. And it is true that we adapt. I was born in a city where 24° C was close to the minimum winter temperatures. I don't remember seeing temperatures below 20° over there. And nowadays I like cooler places a lot.

The years living here have taught me a lot. That was one of them. Even though I have lived in other places before, I arrived here without knowing several things and I learned. Often having no one to teach me. Have you lived in places with different climates from where you lived before going there? How was the adaptation? What did you learn from the experience? Did that influence your choice of the next destination? How?

Nycka, the Nomad

🇧🇷 Vamos falar sobre o clima

Vamos falar do clima?

Os anos morando aqui me ensinaram muita coisa.

🇬🇧 Billie Eilish’s change in appearance

This week, singer Billie Eilish shared on her Instagram profile photos she took for British Vogue. I saw some comments, both on the magazine's social networks and other channels, criticizing the girl for having changed the look and made a rehearsal with a very sensual image for the magazine.

Billie is 19 years old. When looking at the photos, I remembered a client I had a few years ago. I don't know Billie Eilish's work much, I've never seen a single interview with her, and I won't judge her self-image before or now. My point is to address this change by analysing its impact on fans and women with similar bodies.

My client was a young, married woman who wore huge clothes because she thought she was fat, when in reality she had full, natural breasts. Wearing baggy clothes tends to make the body look bigger. So, for those who have a problem with self-image, the result is to aggravate this problem. The client glared at me when I said we were going to slim down her wardrobe. But that's exactly what I did, without imposing. My only imposition was: wear first, complain later. With thirty years of experience, the chances of me making mistakes in the suggestions I give to clients are small. So, when trying on the clothes I suggested, the client realised that they were beautiful and did not complain. In the course of the process she also started to feel attractive.

But back to Billie Eilish, what problems do people who have criticised the Vogue photos have to feel uncomfortable with the sensual image of the photos? Perhaps these people do not see sensuality in themselves. Perhaps they identified with the singer's previous image, with the roots of her hair dyed green and immense clothes. Or both.

Some image consultants use labels to define styles. I don't like labels because, in my opinion, we may want to go out one day with maxi cardigans and combat boots, hiding the body, and on another day or occasion to wear clothes that enhance our appearance. We are not a label. But still, true style requires some points of consistency.

Striking changes in appearance can reflect profound inner changes. Apparently this is exactly the reason why Billie Eilish left her green hair aside and did a photoshoot that shocked so many people. She has changed. And in a time when people worship celebrities who have had dozens of plastic surgeries and aesthetic procedures, it is revolutionary to seek to value their own beauty only with clothes, makeup, good choices of cut and hair colour, good nutrition and simple care with their bodies and health.

Not changing is a sign that there is something very wrong with the person. Those looking for evolution and personal development also seek to change their appearance without resorting to cosmetic surgery. They seek to recognise their own beauty and improve it with acts of self-love such as eating better, dressing better, etc. And it takes work to reach that. But it is a rewarding work.

Billie Eilish, by showing the world this sensual side of her - did you notice the tattoo on the hip of the singer in the photos? - it also tells other women in naturally voluptuous bodies that they are attractive and sensual. She is young and her image and style can mature and change a lot. The accommodated fans must struggle to keep up with her.
