Paguei a corrida e vim o resto a pé.

Sozinha. E foi ótimo! Já tinha ido a muitos outros shows sozinha.

🇬🇧 Advantages and disadvantages of living in the countryside in Brazil

My father was a farmer and my second home, therefore, was in the countryside. For a few years there was no electric light on the farm, but then the only thing that really changed was that we had a TV at home, with a satellite dish to get the signal from some channels.

Advantages of living in the countryside in Brazil, from my experience:

    • Horses! 😍 I love riding horses. During part of my childhood I was very scared, but it is an animal that I always liked a lot. On my 18th birthday it was the glory when my maternal grandfather gave me an Mangalarga breed almost black, beautiful!
    • Little traffic. Low noise. Fresh air.
    • We consumed a lot of fresh chicken meat and something that I haven't discovered in the city yet: chicken blood in the sauce. As the kitchen killed the animal in the backyard, that was it. No, I will not buy the live chicken and kill!!! And I never found chicken blood to sell on the market.  😁
    • The landscape. The last time I went there, in 2010, my grandmother's cowboy, who saw me grow up, asked if Curitiba was more beautiful than Barreiras. It is not.  I was lucky to grow up on a farm surrounded by mountains on all sides. Hence the name Barreiras. It was not easy to get there, the mountain road has some very tense stretches, but it was good and the place has that simple and unique beauty of the cerrado, with its twisted trees scattered here and there amid a half-height grass or parched vegetation.  .
    • People are kind and welcome. Not all are kind, but if you go to someone's house in the countryside, be it a pawn or a farmer, they always serve coffees worthy of colonial coffee and it's rude to refuse. On these visits, prose runs naturally.
    • Have parties! 😁 And it is better to know how to dance forró. And don't look at married women, if you're a man, as there is a risk of getting shot for it. Drunk red necks are not civilized.
    • You can grow almost everything you need to eat in the yard. At home there were fruits, pigs and chickens, cattle, and in some stages we also had goats. We bought the rest. But you could have vegetables there. We didn't have it because we weren't raised eating it.
    • It has internet and telephone. When I lived there I didn't have internet, but nowadays they have this benefit.
    • If you think about buying land, rural tourism is still little explored in Brazil and is an activity that I recommend as an investment. The mentality of many farmers is still focused on agribusiness and most do not have the vision of how to generate other sources of income with that space.)
    • Owls. (If you like the Harry Potter story, like me, seeing real owls at night near your home is an incredible experience. In the city you will hardly have such an opportunity).
    • For those who have money to invest and do not have children of school age, it seems to me a more interesting option than living in a country town. Understand this by reading the disadvantages below.

Disadvantages of living in rural Brazil:

    • The rural school (in the village near my father's farm) went only up to the 4th grade. Usually students from different grades attended the class together, because the school was small and there were few children studying.  Still, the cook's daughter studied at that school and continued her school life in the city, including college. And she returned to teach at that same school.
    • There is no hospital, health post, bank, supermarket or bank card sales (credit or debit) or ATM. There are small markets in the villages, as well as in the cities, with the product options that local people normally use.
    • The "culture" in the countryside is limited to television and radio.
    • If you don't have a car, transportation options to the city are limited.

If you liked the tips, follow the blog and my profiles on social networks so you don't miss the next content. If you have a farm hotel or other rural business that might be of interest to my audience, consider sponsoring experiences on this blog.  And if you can, buy me a (virtual) coffee at Ko-fi in return for the tips.

See you tomorrow!

  • A paisagem.
Nessas visitas a prosa corre naturalmente.
O resto a gente comprava.

🇬🇧 Advantages and disadvantages of living in the interior of Brazil

Advantages and disadvantages of living in cities in the interior of Brazil is the theme of this text. I never lived in cities with less than three hundred thousand inhabitants. This is a medium-sized city for brazilian standards. I visited many smaller cities traveling. My main reference is medium-sized cities, but the references I have to smaller cities are part of this text too. In the next text I speak of the advantages and disadvantages of living in the countryside. Include the blog in your favorite feed reader or follow by email so you don't miss a thing.

Advantages of living in cities in the interior of Brazil

    • In general, the smaller the city, the lower the cost of living. There are exceptions, such as small towns with great tourist appeal.
    • The sense of security tends to be greater in smaller cities, although violence exists even in povoados (places inhabited by a few tens or a few hundred people in the countryside, with a commercial structure and usually a school, and without self-government. The mayor responsible for the povoado is the one responsible for the municipality of which that povoado is part).
    • There are popular cultural events that are usually forgotten or unknown in capitals, and some happen so close to us that we cannot ignore them, such as the June festivities in Caruaru and Campina Grande or the party of the catopês in Montes Claros, which takes place in the month of August.
    • If the city is close to a capital and the roads are good or there are regular and direct commercial flights, it is possible to travel easily to enjoy the benefits of the capitals.

Disadvantages of living in the interior of Brazil

    • If you wear something very different, many people are staring as if you were a being from another planet.
    • The smaller the city, the less leisure options there are.
    • Also, the variety of universities is less than in capitals.
    • The smaller the city, the greater the chances of finding your ex.
    • Gossip. Once I went out at night with my brother in the city where I was born and the next day in the morning someone had already gone to tell my mother that saw me at the pizzeria with a boyfriend. (My brother lived with my father). And the city is not even small!!!
    • Very little variety of restaurants. Where I was born there are basically Portuguese restaurants, pizzerias, steakhouses and buffet restaurants per kilo (something that apparently only exists in Brazil or maybe exists outside as a Brazilian initiative). In Uberlândia there were also Chinese restaurants and a Japanese restaurant when I lived there. Not every capital has much more than that.
    • Perhaps because of gossip, people's creativity and their desire to do something different is inversely proportional to the size of the city. The smaller the city, the less people put creativity into practice in all aspects of life.

Follow the blog and my profiles on social networks so as not to miss the next texts and comment on your experiences about living in small cities in your country.

🇬🇧 Advantages and disadvantages of living in brazilian capitals

Today I will share a little of my experience in living in different places, presenting positive and negative aspects of living in capitals in Brazil. In the next text I will share the advantages and disadvantages of living in the smaller cities.

Advantages of living in capitals:

    • Greater variety of cultural activities.
    • Greater variety of languages in language schools (not all, but, already living in Curitiba, I met a colleague from the Italian course in Uberlândia when I went there exactly ten years ago and she said she never managed to complete the course because the school could not  I didn’t have enough students for more advanced levels of the language! In addition, I’ve never heard of a Dutch or Finnish course in the small towns, although possibly some capitals don’t have it either).
    • International shows. They rarely happen in the small towns.
    • Film festivals that take you around the world and out of the world of Hollywood cinema. Nothing against Hollywood, but it's good to vary and see the world from different angles.
    • The bigger the city, the greater the tendency to respect LGBT + people.
    • In some capitals you can buy designer clothes (and I refer to those brands whose collections do not take into account what the trend bureaus say), even wear them to go to the mall and most of the time the trade will not stop for you wearing that type of clothing. Almost no one cares if you are wearing green hair with purple polka dots or a dress that resembles Lady Gaga's boldest performances, or if you are a man wearing a skirt and with black eyeshadow.
    • Greater variety of internet and telephony providers.
    • More university options (which does not always mean more quality. UFPR's advertising course in Curitiba was closed years ago because it was training people at a very low level).

Disadvantages of living in capitals:

    • Despite all of the above advantages, natives of capital rarely enjoy most of them. I've seen free screenings of excellent films with less than ten people in the audience! This proves that the appreciation for art and certain aspects of culture is a quality of few.
    • The cost of living is higher. But not much, compared to more relevant medium-sized cities. When I moved to Porto Alegre I did a calculation of how much I would spend there and the amount was just above what I would spend in Uberlândia if I paid rent. And in the first year in Porto Alegre I often ordered restaurant food. I lived in a rented room and not in an apartment just for me, but it had this bonus benefit.
    • As there are a lot of people with no qualifications for anything that changes to capitals just because they can't find jobs in the small cities or maybe because in capitals the number of wealthy people is greater, crimes and violence tend to be more frequent problems in capitals. I have lost count of how many fakes profiles of luxury restaurants in São Paulo sent me messages about promotions that were scams for the simple fact that I followed the real profile of the restaurant.
    • In the capitals of the south many people with high purchasing power dress so badly that it is difficult to know just by looking who has a birthplace and who doesn't. I like the idea that everyone knows their place in the world gear and dresses in a way that reflects their social position and cultural level. And this is how things work in the smaller cities where I lived. And although in some capitals there is an offer of exclusive clothing, it is not something I see when I go to the mall, a restaurant or a museum.
    • The geographical area of capital tends to be larger and so we can spend more time commuting to work, concerts, etc.

Observe these points well and read the next text (register your email in the 🔔 in the sidebar and follow my profiles on the social networks that I always share in the main ones that I post here). This can help you deconstruct illusions about living in capitals or in the small towns.  If you want, buy me a coffee at ko-fi in return for the tips.

    • Shows internacionais. Raramente eles acontecem no interior.
    • Quanto maior a cidade, maior a tendência a respeitar pessoas LGBT+.

🇬🇧 Path

I have lived in 4 cities so far and today I am going to talk about some interesting points about each one.

I was born in Montes Claros, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It is not a tourist city, but it does receive some commercial flights from Belo Horizonte, which means that if you leave another state you have to make a connection in BH to get there. There is also road transport. But the roads are terrible. I never went there by plane, so I can't say which is the best option. If you are or have been, tell me!

In Montes Claros, the parties and restaurants usually focus on the so-called “avenida sanitária”. Lately it seems that some good restaurants have appeared outside that small stretch of Avenida Deputado Esteves Rodrigues (which has the ugly nickname I mentioned above).

The city currently has 2 malls. As I remember it has 2 parks (municipal park and Sapucaia park).

The people are very hospitable and the local hotel websites are terrible. The last time I went there I stayed at the home of a young medical student through Couchsurfing and I loved the experience. We even had a meeting of the few members of the city's Couchsurfing at the mall!

The most typical dish of local cuisine is rice with pequi and carne de sol. Montes Claros sun meat (carne de sol) is NOT what gauchos call beef jerky. The carne de sol is also served as a snack, in fried cubes, often accompanied by manioc, in the bars. In the city it is also possible to find pequi liquor, pequi oil, etc. The oil helps to give pequi taste to rice for us who live far away. I was sent one once, but it “froze” in Curitiba at room temperature in the summer, outside the refrigerator. 😂😂😂😂 I had to leave the bottle in the sun every day to use a little bit that melted.

A very beautiful place to go is also the Pampulha lagoon, which is on the way between the airport and the city center.

And if you have good contacts or rent a car, tours of the region's farms can yield beautiful photos. I, in particular, love the cerrado images. Of course it is beautiful to see green vegetation like here in the south, but the landscape of the cerrado is unique.

The local architecture also enchants me. The cathedral is a beautiful church. The oldest houses in the center, close to the mother church, on João Pinheiro street, where my paternal grandmother lived for many years, bocaiúva street… and to give a contrast, a stroll through the neighborhoods São Luiz, Melo and Todos os Santos (I would include Ibituruna too, if you are in the mood), with more modern houses and some beautiful ones.

Uberlândia, in turn, is more accustomed to business tourism. The city is better structured to receive tourists and receives more commercial flights daily. The road that connects the city to São Paulo is also quite decent, so arriving by land is relatively quiet.

In gastronomy what catches my attention in Uberlândia are the pamonhas. In Montes Claros I only knew sweet pamonhas without filling. In Uberlândia and throughout the “triângulo mineiro”, even Patos de Minas, there are salted pamonhas and stuffed with cheese, pepperoni and more that creativity demands.  😋

In college, the interesting places to go out were in the center and it was very safe to walk around the center. I lived near the central terminal and sometimes came back from the club, at the other end of the center, on foot with my friends and it was quite safe. I cannot guarantee that it remains so. Twenty years go by.

”In my time” the city only had one mall that you can call a mall: the Center Shopping.

And there is the Sabiá park (which I never went to). And restaurants / bars have some good ones in various parts of the city.

The city's public transport system is integrated and is better than Curitiba's, mainly because it has a central terminal and the way the central terminal works (you can leave the terminal for up to half an hour without paying for another ticket). I don't know if it's the same at the other terminals in the city.

Porto Alegre is a city that I don't recommend visiting in the summer. Most people living in Porto Alegre leave the capital in January. Only the ones who need to work remain in the city. Anyone who can (middle class and above)  go to the coast because the city is unbearably hot! I would recommend escaping to the Serra Gaúcha in the summer. Few people, because it is out of season, and a super pleasant temperature. But Porto Alegre is a very beautiful city, with parks that are worth a visit like the Parcão and the Parque da Redenção (go on a Sunday. It is full of people around the park and there are craft and food stands on the street in front of the  arc). The gaucho barbecue is very famous. I'm not super fan of beef, so my opinion about it doesn't matter so much, but it's not bad. There are also “galeto” in the region.  I don't know how to explain it, I never ate, but is a young chicken. My gastronomic experience in Porto was eating steak from a very good restaurant close to home, acarajés from the park Redenção (on Sundays), and pizzas. Besides, I usually made food at home.

Watching the sunset on the gasometer is mandatory. Also in the central region there is the house of culture Mario Quintana, the municipal market and the “most beautiful street in the world” (Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho), in the Independência neighborhood.

The most “tourist” regions of the city, I believe, are two. Cidade Baixa, which has many bars and the famous Opinion bar, where, “in my time”, all the international metal shows took place, except the Live’n’louder festival, which was at Gigantinho. The neighborhood is also very close to the Grêmio and Inter stadiums. The profile of the local bars is very popular for students, some “dirty feet” and more alternative bars. And there is the other region, for those who want something more bourgeois, which is the Moinhos de Vento neighborhood, where most of the good hotels and good restaurants are located in the capital. Each of the 2 parks I mentioned is in the vicinity of one of these neighborhoods.

In Curitiba, you can take the tour bus and visit the main sights of the city. Of the points in the tour bus itinerary my favorites are the barigui park, the lookout tower (Oi tower) which is close by and has a beautiful view of the city and the botanical garden.

A cute spot that is worth visiting outside the tourist bus route is the Japan Square. It is also worth visiting the Largo da Ordem, where there was a craft fair on Sunday morning. Also include a tour of museums, such as the Oscar Niemeyer museum, known as the eye museum; Guido Viaro museum and a red museum at the beginning of street Desembargador Westphalen, in the center. The last two are always free. Niemeyer is paid, but has a free day.

Most of the good restaurants are in the neighborhoods Batel, Água verde and Bigorrilho (also called Champagnat). Most of the good hotels are in Batel.  The typical dish of the region is barreado, a shredded cooked meat with flour, sooo boring (for my taste, which I prefer more spicy and rich in flavors).

The public transport system is very good and integrated. Once I tried to visit the main sights of the city by taking a normal bus with a friend, but I do not recommend it, because in one of the stretches we had to take an “Interbairros” line that took a huge turn to get where we wanted.

🇧🇷 O caminho

Eu, particularmente, amo as imagens do cerrado.

A arquitetura local também me encanta.

Ver o pôr do sol no gasômetro é obrigatório.

Wesphalen, no centro.

🇬🇧 Is dressage beneficial for the dog?

Is dressage beneficial for the dog?

It depends on how the training is done. The last dog I had so far I adopted at the age of 4 and he came full of addictions, because he was trained on the basis of reward and punishment. It was a sad animal, which did not interact with me much. It lived in fear. A beautiful lhasa apso, but with behavior well outside the breed standard.

He only did the necessities on the street, and if the street was wet he wouldn't go out. But I live in Curitiba and it rains too much in this city!!!! Sometimes the animal went DAYS without doing the necessities because of this conditioning. I taught him to do it on the balcony, but it took time for him to understand that in my house he could do certain things that somewhere else, at some point, he was punished for doing.

It also never gave me "kiss" (he never licked me). I taught him that it could kiss and in time it started to kiss my hand.

On the other hand, he went for a walk with me on a leash and was always 2 steps (mine) in front of me. And once the collar loosened around a corner. I just called him, he stopped, picked him up and brought him home. But I don't know if it was dressage or because at that time he already had a very strong bond of trust with me. After that I started to release him in the square and he ran only where he could see me and came back. It was too good to see his happiness when we achieved that. He arrived here so sad, closed, and when he reached that level he seemed to smile. He no longer fought with other male dogs on the street and had fun with other animals.

pastedGraphic.png

(Photo of Hercules smiling. He was dirty and disheveled, but happy)

He was so tough when he arrived that he wasn't much of a cuddle. When he met Marrom and Mel (my mother's dogs) he saw that the two of them when they saw me lay on their backs to get affection and kiss me, and it was the beginning of my training to fix his training vices. Then I discovered that what I did with him intuitively is called positive training, which is about teaching the animal with love and respect, without punishment. And with that he also started to like affection in the belly. And passed it on to cats too.  😂😂🥰🥰

I've always liked animals, but Hercules was a phenomenal little creature. Fortunately I was able to help him to be himself and become a happy animal, fearless and aware that he was very loved.

I recommend using training so as not to create these addictions, understanding that each situation requires a different attitude. When walking in Curitiba I see many dog tutors apologizing if the animal jumps on me or licks me, and drawing the animal's attention or pulling it. And it's a wrong posture because I like this interaction and there are other people who like it too. First you have to know if the person wants that interaction. Animals learn fast when they are taught with love and respect. Even about things like where to do the necessities... think that an animal trained to do in the service area, for example, may have to relearn quickly if the service area undergoes a renovation or if you move. And you have the means to achieve a much faster adaptation if you do not teach based on punishment.

If a trainer talks about punishment or using a choke, run away!!! It will do the animal a lot of harm.

Ele também nunca me dava “beijo” (nunca me lambia).

pastedGraphic.png

(Foto do Hércules sorrindo.

🇬🇧 Tips for people starting to cook

Good Morning! It is not my focus to talk about cooking, for two reasons. One is that sometimes I think my audience doesn't cook. Perhaps I am mistaken, because whoever leaves home to study is, in a sense, a nomad. Especially if you don't want to go back to your hometown. And many students cook at home. Tell me in the comments if you cook, if you have a maid or cook at home or if you always eat restaurant food. The other reason I tell you before the end of the text. But today I decided to share my answer to a question about what tips I would give to those who have no experience in the kitchen. Trust me. They work!

    • Making normal pasta (buying only ready-made pasta, dry or fresh) is almost as easy as making instant pasta and is much more tasty and nutritious. In addition, in the end it is cheaper, depending on the sauces you make. Italian readers will freak out when they read this. I still don't know how to make pasta (except gnocchi and pizza. I mean, the pasta itself, not the recipe with sauce and everything). You can teach me in the comments!!!
    • Making lasagna, rondelli or cannelloni is almost as easy and possibly faster than buying them frozen (I make it in the pan with fresh pasta and it gets ready quickly. In the microwave to make the frozen ones it takes much longer). I accept tips from Italian readers on how to prepare these pastas at home too.
    • If you follow family recipes correctly, chances are good that the food will be good. So, adopt your grandmother's recipe book. Website recipes always risk that the author's taste is very different from yours. Speaking of recipes, a long time ago I shared a super simple recipe for ambrosia here on the blog. If you have tested or test yourself, comment what you think. It was one of the first recipes I prepared in my life.
    • Start by making simple recipes, without many steps in preparation.
    • Making recipes, over time you build up courage and give your personal touch to them and create different things (if you are a creative person).
    • Never open the oven a thousand times when you are baking cake. Do not open it at all before the dough appears to be ready (very golden on top). You may make mistakes sometimes, but the chances of making mistakes by not following these tips are worse. Nothing that a cover does not help to disguise the damage a little, but better to avoid, right?
    • Making your seasoning with salt, garlic, onion and other ingredients is challenging, but when you get it right the point is very good. (I'm not going to tell you to start like this. I've used lots of seasoning I bought already mixed at the supermarket, but if you have the courage to start, take a chance, it's worth it).
    • Making desserts is excellent to find such courage. I started with them and the only time I remember to miss a hand on a candy was because I weighed my hand on the pepper when making a hot chocolate. 🤣🤣#everybodycries

I hate cooking out of obligation. This is my second reason for saying little about cooking here. I accept sponsorships of brands that make the experience in the kitchen much more practical, to see if I lose my tantrum. And good restaurants for the first reason, which I mentioned at the beginning of the text. When I decide to do something well in any field, I hardly fail. These tips are the result of those moments of inspiration. As I've always worked with creativity, the kitchen is sometimes an extension of that. And I learned a few things about it throughout my life.

You may not run a company related to the topics I talk about (read the “Editorial Line” and “About” pages to understand the related topics), but you can buy me a coffee at Ko-Fi (https://ko-fi.com/nycka) if you liked the tips or just want to show your support.
