🇬🇧 7 reasons to be a cultural nomad

Today I’m going to share seven reasons to be a cultural nomad.

  1. It is an experience that greatly expands your view of the world, in a way that tourist travel cannot.
  2. When including a change of country, it is useful to speed up your process of learning a new language (see the text on reasons for being multilingual on this blog).
  3. It is an opportunity to deconstruct beliefs that are often limiting.
  4. For those who live in cities in the interior or with little cultural relevance, migrating to cities of intense cultural life brings you closer to realities you never imagined.
  5. Accessing culture through typical gastronomy gives you very different experiences from eating food from a certain place in a restaurant in another part of the world. Eating Italian food in Brazil is different from eating Italian food in Italy. And vice versa.
  6. A cultured person is a more interesting and more pleasant person to talk to than most people.
  7. A cultured person tends to be more creative, if he knows how to use culture and art as tools for the development of creativity.

🇬🇧 What to do when the dog doesn’t want to eat

Doesn't your dog always eat the kibble?

In addition to health problems, it can do so because the kibble is losing its flavour due to improper storage or because it does not like the feed.

So, first of all, check if you are storing the feed according to the manufacturer's recommendation.

Second, give your pet good quality kibble. I recommend super premium diets without dyes.

Also check how long the kibble is in the pot and the time recommended by the manufacturer for it to remain there. If you can, decrease the amount of food each time you fill the pot and increase the frequency of supply, without increasing the amount of food given each day.

In addition to the tips above, in my experience with dogs it worked very well to pretend that I was putting my food in the pot and mixing it with the kibble. I did this when the food package was near the end (I bought a package for a month), already losing the smell. I once did this with a friend's dog (the dog loved me) and she freaked out. He was already old, he ate special kibble, and I pretended to put pieces of sandwich in the pot because he didn't want to eat it. She yelled at me that I couldn't feed the dog with sandwich while I hit the bottom of the plate in the pot, and when she saw that I just pretended, and even more, that the dog ate the kibble immediately, she had a burst of laughter. But if your dog does not like the food and even in the new package and with adequate storage he does not eat, change the food, buy a better food in a good pet shop. If none of this works, I suggest taking him to a vet.

Eu as compartilhei ontem no meu Instagram. Todas elas são igualmente importantes. São elas:

  1. O que você quer fazer?
  2. Onde você quer viver?

🇬🇧 3 Questions

Today I want to write about 3 questions that are important to design our future. I shared them yesterday on my Instagram. All of them are equally important. They are:

  1. What do you want to do?
  2. Where do you want to live?
  3. With whom do you want to be?

The first question is important to consider what you should study to master the activity you want to have as your future work. Maybe it’s the same work you have nowadays but if you learn nothing, somebody else is doing this.

The second one is about what kind of place makes you happy. Do you prefer to live in a big city full of life 24 hours a day? Do you prefer a small town close to nature? What kind of home is perfect for you?

Then, the last question is about what kind of relationships you want in your life.

If your answers to some question create a conflict with the others you must think a bit more.

While the world is still in the “pandemic mode”, let’s take care of our present at the same time we consider the future we really want and start building this future. I’ve been doing this for a while.

🇬🇧 About coals and diamonds

The social networks and the superficiality of the interpersonal relationships created by them often make us believe that the life of the other, especially of the successful people, is easy and we are suffering, victims of a system or a group that wants to massacre us. Yes, there are certainly people who hate us. Nobody pleases everyone. None of the great religious icons pleased everyone. The biggest celebrities of today or of all history certainly did not please everyone. But while comparing ourselves to those who are being massacred by pressure and identifying with such people, we are hardly going to identify where they are going wrong. And where are we going wrong.

I was always talking to people around me. I have phases of listening a lot. But every now and then I need to speak too. So this superficiality is a little strange to me.

Sometimes we are surrounded by people who are uninspiring to get where we want to be. We see and hear so much of their difficulties that we normalise it. We have heard so much criticism and if we let ourselves be carried away by them and we believe that they define us, we will never get anywhere. We started calling luck the cause of the success of those who stand out. After all, in any statistic, winners are a minority.

Since childhood I have been passionate about reading biographies. And in any biography, even those that are adapted for the cinema and may have a little romanticised content, we see the struggle behind people's success. We see that it was never luck. I see it and it always gives me the strength to face my challenges. I tend to think that if they succeeded I can also achieve my goals, as absurd as they may seem to many people. The difference between the majority and the successful is very clear in any biography.

The conflicts and pains of the majority can be great for creating good popular music, but to be a successful musician you have to have a fight different from the majority, face things from angles that others do not see. See life through the eyes of the winners. Because those who are part of the majority in any statistic only help us to win if we look at such people with a critical eye, seeking to learn both from their mistakes and from ours.

I have already accomplished things that until then were impossible many times. And although some fights take time to be won and some goals are very big, these victories, even if I won the lottery to have a financial boost to reach some goals, were not, are not and will not be mere luck or the result of chance. They are victories built brick by brick.

If you identify with that, with the victories built brick by brick, and you work with art, you can be part of my team. And that doesn't mean being strong all the time, but knowing how to identify and manage your weakness. Even though I have achieved a lot, there are days when I feel like crying or need a friendly shoulder to help put my mind in order. Sometimes the only friendly shoulders available are mine. And if there are only them, the way is to be my best friend and welcome my pain in the same way that I try to be friends with my friends. Was it easy to cultivate that attitude? No. Society presses for perfection (and the pressure itself is not negative or positive). The family presses us to be what they want us to be, many times (and this is negative because it usually distances us from who we really are). There is pressure from everywhere, no matter if we are men, women, white, black, cis or trans, gay or heterosexual, nor does it matter our nationality, religion, if we were born in a golden cradle or if we didn't even have a cradle, if we are famous or anonymous. And? A diamond is a coal that did well under pressure. Are you coal or diamond? Each has its value, certainly. You can't light a barbecue or a fireplace with diamonds. But here, I want to work with diamonds and whoever is willing to polish themselves to become one.

🇬🇧 Change of habit

I recently saw a video of a Brazilian woman living in Canada commenting on some new habits she acquired there. It was funny to see her say that in Brazil, on rainy days, she just stayed at home. And in Canada, if she does that, she'll never leave home.  😂

I was born in a city where it almost never rains. And when it rains it is stifling, a horrible heat. It is really not very encouraging to go out on rainy days. I currently live in Curitiba (I hope to be on another continent in a year), and in Curitiba, like where she lives in Canada, it rains frequently. And we get used to it.

It's a little like going out alone. In Brazil, women are not in the habit of going out alone or traveling alone. I've even seen women in groups of women travelling alone on social network looking for company. I find it curious, but I understand that for some women it is not as easy as it was for me.

I learned to go out alone in college. I went out with a boy that the friend of my roommates wanted to meet and they stopped going out with me for that. So, I learned to go out on my own, starting with activities like going to the movies, then trips, shows, etc. I will not stay home for lack of company. It was not difficult. At that time it was difficult for me to stay at home.

It was no different with the rain. And luckily, the normal thing in Curitiba is to stay cool after the rain. It is nice to go out.

I want to get out of here to a place with snow. I hope I will do it later this year.  Music work will continue wherever I go. By the way, musicians looking for global success must have a good deal of ability to adapt to different foods, cultural habits, deal with public opinion that is not always favourable, and much more.

What habits have you changed throughout your life? How were these changes for you? Answer me in the comments.

Eu nasci numa cidade onde quase nunca chove. E a gente acaba acostumando.

🇬🇧 Mix of styles

I returned! Too much going on. I decided to resume one of the blog's original themes, which is art, because there is a lot going on in my musical universe and I wanted to share it.

This week Apocalyptica released a new song called “Ei vaihtoehtoo” (meaning “no choice” in english) with vocals by a Finnish hip hop singer called Paleface. The sound reminds me more of rap, but when searching the internet for who he is the information is that he sings hip hop.

I still haven't digested the song well. I have no problems with this mix of styles, but a number of factors made this song a difficult work for me to appreciate. Let's talk about it.

The introduction to the song is the introduction to “Bittersweet”. "Bittersweet" is a ballad that has an all instrumental version, without vocals, which I love; and one with Ville Valo and Lauri Ylönen, lead singer of The Rasmus, both Finns, singing in English. I am not going to say that the introduction is exactly the same because it has been thirty years since I studied music (I want to study again in 2021). But it sounds identical. Then suddenly a vocalist appears singing rap! In Finnish! It's a shock. And I understand that it is a bigger shock because they use the introduction of "Bittersweet". If it were a song with a completely new instrumental it would be easier to digest, to enjoy. The use of music that creates an expectation of ballads has made assimilation more difficult.

Apocalyptica was not the first band to mix styles and will certainly not be the last. From what I know of the band's work, although they have an identification with metal, they are not limited in the process of composition by the label of metal band. An example is the song “Hole in my soul”, which I shared a piece of the lyrics on my Instagram days ago. It has a jazzy or bluesy feel, it is far from common metal band music. And it's beautiful. Perfect interpretation of Franky Perez!

An example of a mix of styles that have several duets recorded in this way is the Dutch rock band Bløf. They sing in Dutch and, as far as I know, are super famous in their country of origin. But there are songs by them with the Portuguese fado singer Cristina Branco (who has a wonderful voice); with the Portuguese Fernando Lameirinhas; with Sabrina Starke, another divine voice that usually sings folk, jazz, soul and R&B, among others. With artists who do not have Dutch as their native language, participation is usually done in the original language of the invited artist. And the results I saw were good.

Another example that followed this path of bringing artists of other styles as guests is the band Within Temptation. In the Hydra album, the American rapper Xzibit participated in the song “and we run”, which I like a lot, although rap is not my thing.

Anyway, taking risks is part of the game. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes things don't have the result we expect. But doing what we believe is important.

Music has been a recurring theme on my Instagram, sometimes with some old images. The blog continues, and I recommend that you follow it and include it in your favorite feed reader so you don't miss a thing.

Did you hear any of the songs I mentioned in this text?  What did you think of them?

🇧🇷 Mix de estilos

Voltei! Muita coisa acontecendo.

Enfim, correr riscos faz parte do jogo.

🇬🇧 A cultural nomad in cinema

Each place follows fashion trends at a pace. I don't expect to find audacious people in a small town wearing exclusive designer clothes from super authorial collections, even though I was such a person in my hometown. And as there is this difference in rhythms and also the climatic and cultural differences, what you wear where you currently live will not always be interesting in your next destination.

So it is an advantage that you have an open mind to allow your style to evolve regardless of the circumstances and where you live. You can choose to adapt completely, and kill part of your individuality, or create conditions for the style to evolve.

Two good references for this are the films “The devil wears Prada” and “The dressmaker”. Both inspired by books, but here the visual reference of cinema is important. The difference in attitude of the characters is also crucial.

In the case of the first film, the character Andrea was forced to change her style (I mean, her total lack of style) to adapt to the dress code of the company where she found a job. However, she never accepted that style. She was limited and poorly dressed, and she didn't want to change or take the opportunity to improve in every way. If you saw the film, you know what she did in the end that proves this resistance to improve or lack of preparation to improve so much in a genuine way.

The way a person dresses does not define his talent as a professional, but denying an opportunity for evolution that includes a change of style for the better says a lot about how the person looks at life. I never met anyone who saw the film and found Andrea's appearance at the beginning of the film inspiring. Because it just isn't.

The second film the character Tilly evolved during her travels around the world, and the visual and cultural shock when she returns to her hometown was great. This was not her place, even though she was born in the city. Because she voluntarily raised her standards when she left, she refused to pretend to be as limited as the locals when she returned. And it generated very controversial reactions. The movie is great and so is the book.

In life there are many different profiles when it comes to managing personal style linked to personal and professional evolution, but Tilly's profile is that of a cultural nomad who uses opportunities to evolve inside and out without fear of big leaps. A beautiful example of how personal style and lifestyle intertwine.

Nycka, the Nomad

No entanto, ela nunca aceitou aquele estilo.

🇬🇧 Brazilian habits

Today I will talk about some Brazilian habits that may be different from those of other countries. As Brazil is immense, when there are differences that I recognize between regions, I will mention them. And if you know of any other differences, comment. I will remember that this refers mainly to the reality of middle-upper or upper-class families. If you come to Brazil from another country, following this blog you will find tips to adapt your behavior more easily to the local culture. Good local culture. Avoid bad influences.

• In Brazil, when we meet friends and acquaintances, we greet with two or three kisses on the cheek. In some regions three, and in others, two. This is more common in meetings between women or women and men, but not between men, who normally shake hands.

• In small towns people ALWAYS greet people they know on the street. In this case, it can be a wave of the hand or head and a “hi” or “good morning / good afternoon / good evening” according to the time. It is extremely rude for you to pass by an acquaintance without saying hello. I suggest following this behavior also in larger cities. I have already met a neighbor in Curitiba who was born in a small town and once commented to me how strange he is that in the capital people even pretend not to see him so as not to greet him. Pretending not to see, looking away or turning away is rude anywhere in the country.

• As I said in the previous text, Brazilians from wealthier families usually have a domestic servant at home to cook, clean and organize the home. I know that anywhere in the world wealthy people have employees. I mention this because a middle class person in London or New York, if they come to Brazil keeping their income from the country of origin, whether working remotely or income from investments, can live in a much more comfortable pattern in Brazil. Generally, housekeepers are people of a very low cultural level, often semi-illiterate.

• Due to the dimensions of the territory, the houses usually have a yard and many have a garden. In the warmer regions it is common to have a swimming pool.

• In some regions it is a habit to take a gift when we go to someone's home for the first time. I learned this in Curitiba, where going to others' homes is not common. As it is a cute habit I think that other regions and even other countries could adopt as well.

In the next texts I will share more tips regarding cultural nomadism, so register your email in “Follow by email” or include the blog in your favorite feed reader using 🔔 to receive the blog texts published from your registration.
