🇬🇧 Guide to living with cats

🇬🇧 Etiquette guide for living with dogs
Today we are going to talk about simple rules of etiquette for those who have dogs and for those who live with dogs. In other words, it is a text for you, because absolutely everyone lives with dogs in the civilized world, in one way or another.
For those who have dogs:
• Take your dog for a walk every day even if you have a large yard at home. Even small dogs need to socialize with other dogs in order to have quality of life, which is why walks are important. It is important that the walks also meet the animal's energy expenditure needs. This will prevent the dog from destroying your furniture due to pure stress.
• Offer fresh, clean water and good quality feed (super premium) in quantities appropriate to the size and age of the animal.
• When taking the dog for a walk, collect its shit 💩. It is not good to leave the animal's wastes scattered on the street.
• Vaccinate your dog correctly and fight endo and ectoparasites with veterinary guidance.
• Provide a comfortable place for your pet to sleep. Heated, without humidity and with good ventilation. Leaving dogs asleep on the balcony or in the backyard without a house with an appropriate bed creates the risk of them crying at night and unnecessarily disturbing neighbours.
• Dogs bark. It's normal. Some breeds bark more than others and all bark much more than normal when their needs are being neglected. Be responsible and meet your dog's needs. You chose to include it in your life. Your neighbours are not required to tolerate the consequences of your irresponsibility.
• When leaving the house with the dog, always keep it using a collar and leash. Prevents leaks, accidents and gives a sense of security to people who are afraid of dogs.
• Never train a dog using methodologies that include punishment if the animal disobeys the command.
• Before buying a breed dog, get to know the breed standard on the official website of the kennel club of your country, as well as the best breeders of the breed, to ensure that the acquired animal really has the characteristics of the breed and that you are prepared to deal with its needs. If you just want a cute puppy, adopt it. Buying by status or just to show off the animal's physical beauty is a pathetic and irresponsible choice.
• Never abandon a dog.
• Never physically attack a dog.
• Never leave a dog that needs to spend a lot of energy without physical exercise for many hours. Leaving a dog like that trapped in a small space all day is irresponsible. If you don't have time, pay for a pet sitter.
For those who live with dogs:
• Report abuse when you have evidence.
• Understand that dogs bark, and if you have any intolerance to barking you should see a psychologist.
• When visiting someone who has a dog, understand that you are the visitor and the dog is part of the family, in most cases. Even if you don't feel comfortable, respect the animal. If you are afraid of dogs, you can notify tutors in advance, but it is more worthwhile to see a psychologist to overcome this problem. It is very annoying to have to step on eggs with the emotional triggers of others.
• If you notice that your neighbour is neglecting the animal, offer help before complaining.
• Suggestions such as saying that the person should remove the vocal cords from the animal, use methods of training with punishment and other cruelties are prohibited. If you have this kind of idea, see a psychologist urgently.
• If the noise of the neighbour's dogs disturbs your concentration at work in the home office (or in an office where you have dogs in the neighbourhood), listen to a good classical music album, with headphones in respect for other people, while you work. The same goes if you are having trouble sleeping.
• If you don't want to help your neighbour, you hate dogs and don't want to seek psychological help, go live in the countryside, away from civilisation. No one is forced to tolerate your intolerance for something perfectly natural.

🇬🇧 One more foreign language
Shall we talk about learning languages? I commented on music as one of my first contacts with a country's culture in one of the last posts, with Finnish bands that I've heard in the last twenty-something years, and today I would also like to talk about the role of music in language learning, for me, as well as other important points that helped me to gain confidence in my knowledge of the languages I speak and to dialogue with people from all over the world.
I started studying English because I was encouraged by a colleague, but I always wanted to study the language to understand what the songs said, since at that time, in the mid-90s, I still didn't use the internet (I started using it in 99).
I always studied English at a language school, and I took some classes with a friend who was a language teacher at the time, the same who encouraged me to study. In addition to the classes, I kept reading the inserts of my music CDs, and trying to understand what each song said.
When I started using the Internet, I met a lot of people from other countries and practiced my English, still a bit lame, talking to these people. The internet helped me a lot. I was slow to consider myself fluent because I am a bit of a perfectionist, and even after completing the course and speaking to people from all over the world without any major problems I did not see myself as fluent.
Then a friend asked me to translate Buddhist texts, a professional translator proofread, and as the translations were good I gained confidence.
Having overcome the English stage, I embraced the study of Italian, which I had interrupted, in self-taught mode and songs and conversation, followed by films in Italian and some books in the language helped me a lot to gain some security in communicating in this language. I even tried to read “The Divine Comedy” in Italian, but it is very difficult. I shelved the project to resume in the future.
Excited with the text about Finland, and remembering so many positive associations with the country, in the past few days I am becoming familiar with the Finnish language. We can say that I am studying the language, but I have not yet developed a study plan because I have to find a good material to understand grammar, or a good teacher. I accept tips! 😁 It is the first time that I venture to study a language starting alone. And in Curitiba there’s no language schools teaching Finnish.
What has always helped me was curiosity, and my ease in talking to many people. I am a bit of a perfectionist, but not to the point of being afraid of exposing myself to error. I feel comfortable running the risk of communicating and making mistakes, because I create opportunities for other people to contribute positively to my learning by teaching me the right way or a better way. If you worry too much about your accent or pronunciation, you end up wasting precious energy that you could use to make communication simpler.
It is worth remembering that since I was 16 years old I have been aware of my interest in communication, which led me to study advertising, so, for me, it is worth expressing what I want, and if I need to use mimicry or emojis I do.
I believe that studying grammar well is very useful for any language. And using audiovisual resources, such as music and movies, to have contact with the language is going a step further. The other is to face the challenge of talking to speakers of the language studied. And it is essential to have an interest in the culture of places that speak that language for the learning process to be more pleasant.
How about we start this challenge of learning a new language together? I'm taking my first steps with Finnish, and what language are you going to start studying from today? Follow me here on the blog and on social media so that we can motivate each other in this challenge.
I suggest you to study portuguese, as in any social media brazilians usually become a large crowd quickly and many simply don’t speak english even in the content shared by foreigners.

A internet me ajudou muito.

🇬🇧 A liberating choice
I was born in a country town and grew up having to have company for everything. Even to go to the bathroom in bars or restaurants, the girls had to have company. So, I moved to Uberlândia and on the first day of school I had to have lunch alone in a restaurant because we hadn't gone to the supermarket and my roommates studied all day. My mother used to say that anyone who has lunch alone is a whore. I took a book with me, but during lunch I realized that there were many people having lunch alone, including women. And none of them looked as whores. They were more likely students like me and professionals who worked in the neighborhood. I lived in downtown, very close to the central bus terminal. Weeks later, at a party, I kissed a boy who I later learned that a friend of my flatmates had wanted to kiss him for some time. I know that if you think the same way my mom do you’re thinking badly of me now. Worse for you. After that they started to invent all kinds of excuses for not going out with me. And then I started going to the cinema alone, got other companies for parties and went on with my life. Still in Uberlândia, I traveled to see Shaman in 2 shows, on the tour of the album Ritual, one in Belo Horizonte and another in São José do Rio Preto. Alone! In BH I stayed at an aunt's house and in São José I stayed at a hotel. In both destinations I met people from the band's fan club before the show. When I went to Porto Alegre, then I started doing everything myself. It was almost a year without company for nothing, except for one or two MBA class parties. And I keep having fun, going out, going to parties, shows, cinema, restaurant, etc. with or without company. But if it is to have company I prefer good company. Life is too short for bad coffee. I am less and less tolerant of mediocrity.

🇬🇧 How I choose hotels
Today I’m going to talk a little bit about how I choose a hotel, especially in a destination I don’t know yet.
On every trip I create my own script, and I've already given tips here on the blog on how you can make yours. With the script I can identify the places where I want to go in that destination (tours, professional appointments, etc.) and the approximate location that the hotel should have. With that in mind, I discover the hotels in that region, to lose little time with travel, I see on the website of each hotel what they offer, and choose what seems to me to offer the best stay for a price that fits my budget.
Sometimes I just see what the best hotels are in a destination with rates that fit my budget and choose one, but even here I analyze the location enough not to be in a place far from everything. I did this when I went to Recife and stayed in a good hotel, close to the Boa Viagem beach, relatively close to the event I went to and the taxi ride to the Recife shopping mall was not very long. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to enjoy the beach or visit street shops in the city, which has one of the best cuisines in Brazil.
On these business trips I look for a hotel that has a wonderful bed and an even better shower. If it has a hot tub, I will love it. I stayed in a hotel in Fortaleza that had one in the bedroom. After a tiring day, a hydromassage bath is just too good. In those cases things like sauna, swimming pool and gym are not things that I value because I won't even have time to enjoy them. But when I travel with time to rest these things and others count positives for the hotel.
Another thing I value is the hotel's breakfast. Dishes of regional cuisine or made with ingredients typical of the region conquer me easily. I think one of the best things about any trip is to taste the flavors of the region. I like it when you have waffles, jellies, honey, pies, and some savory options like breads, cheeses and ham, things that can please the palates of anyone in the world, but with a good variety of local treats.
In the destinations I already know, I can choose hotels where I have already stayed or try other hotels. It depends on the experiences I had, the purpose of the trip and how much my quality standards have changed since the previous experience.

• Children of Bodom.
• The Rasmus.
• The 69 eyes.

Hei! (This is how we write hello in Finnish!) Today I decided to talk a little bit more about music. I love to know different cultures and music has been one of my favourite resources to start.
I remember many years ago I started listening to some Finnish bands and one day I met a finnish guy online. He taught me a bit about the kalevala, Jean Sibelius, some music about kalevala, showed me some pictures he took on his neighbourhood during the winter and the like. This was 20 years ago. When I moved I lost contact with him. Since then the only finnish people I met were band members, in person. These days I was watching some videos about Finland and I reminded that time.
So, if you’re curious about Finland, this post is to share some bands from that country I really appreciate and this is a first step to know finnish culture.
The very first finnish band I knew was Apocalyptica. That time - the 90’s - I still lived in Montes Claros and listened only to pop music, the boring songs the local radios used to play, then my cousin started listening to Iron Maiden, Metallica, Helloween and Apocalyptica (their first album, playing Metallica’s songs with cellos) and invited me to listen to these bands. I really appreciated them. I didn’t know where the bands were from yet.
Some time later I discovered the internet and started chatting with people from many different places, including the finnish guy I mentioned in the second paragraph. I discovered bands as Nightwish and Sonata Arctica and people with similar musical preferences talked about other bands in a way I could develop my own musical taste.
Let’s focus on the finnish bands as Finland has an interesting culture, with some similarities with the region where I live nowadays. I discovered these days (summer) in Helsinki is hotter than here (in the brazilian city I’m living)... 😂 I was so ignorant! I imagined Finland as a very cold place. But... in the 90’s when I have that finnish friend I lived in a place much hotter than the one I’m living now. Feel free to share peculiarities about Finland in the comments, as well as other interesting artists.
Ops... the bands I know (in bold the ones I still listen often):
- Amorphis. Tomi Joutsen is among my favourite singers. I already shared a list with my favourite singers in this blog.
- Apocalyptica. The band playing more often in my playlists nowadays.
- Carmen Gray. I discovered them through MySpace and interviewed Nicklas, the singer, in my previous blog in 2008.
- Children of Bodom. I went to their show in Porto Alegre in 2004. I like some songs, and I listen to War of razors from time to time because I like this playing with keyboards.
- Entwine. Great band, but there’s a long time I don’t listen. Great to remember. Tonight I’ll see on Spotify what they are doing.
- Kotipelto. He has a great voice.
- Lullacry. Wow! They’re fun, but there’s a long time they are not in my playlists. One more to check tonight.
- Maija Vilkkumaa. A pop singer. I like some of her songs, as “Ei”, although I understand nothing and need to check the translations.
- Nightwish. I went to some of their shows in Brazil and had the opportunity to meet them in 2004 and in the first tour with Anette singing with the band.
- The Rasmus. I only know one song they have with Anette Olzon singing and Bittersweet, a song by Apocalyptica their singer is a featured singer. Lauri Ylönen’s voice is good though.
- Rinneradio. I don’t remember how is their music but I remember this was among the first finnish bands I discovered in the early 2000’s.
- Sonata Arctica. I went to their show in Sao Paulo some years ago, it’s one of the first finnish metal bands I knew.
- Stratovarius. During the 2000’s I listened to them a lot. Later, no more.
- Sturm und drang. Their songs are good. I started listening to this band when they were adolescents. Another one to check and maybe include more songs in my playlist.
- Tarja Turunen. She has an amazing voice but my only (almost) personal contact with her in 2004 with Nightwish left a bad impression as she ran away from the fans in the airport and I avoid her songs since then. For me this personal contact with the artists I like is really important. I continue loving Nightwish because they are always kind.
- The 69 eyes. I went to a festival in Porto Alegre in 2005 where they played. Lots of fun, but lately I’m not listening to their songs.
- Zen Café. One more from the early 2000’s I don’t remember how is their music.
I had the help of Wikipedia to remember these bands. And I suggest you to try to find even the ones I don’t even remember their style. It’s a great experience to know finnish culture. I possibly will check the Wikipedia list to discover some more artists.
Finns, you can share more musical tips and more about Finland in the comments. I accept your help to diminish my ignorance about the country.

🇬🇧 Tips about Porto Alegre, in Brazil
After living in Uberlândia, I went to live in Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul. This text has tips about the city and some of my experiences there. I lived in Porto Alegre between the beginning of 2004 and the end of 2007. During that time I lived in rented rooms, in Cidade Baixa and in Menino Deus neighborhood. As I was studying at night and some days I couldn't organize to go to the supermarket, I started ordering restaurant food when I got home from class. I soon realized that restaurant prices were not very different from the cost that I would have to make the same dish by buying the ingredients at the supermarket and I started doing this regularly. I went to metal shows often, but I had almost no other forms of leisure, so I will say little about the topic. What I know about this is that there are many simple bars around Cidade Baixa and others that are more refined in the Moinhos de Vento region. Moinhos is one of the noble neighborhoods of the city. In addition, on weekends during the day people often go to the parks or to the Gasometer plant. In this, it is possible to watch a beautiful sunset. In Parque da Redenção on Sundays there is a small market, which the gauchos call brique da Redenção, where it is possible to buy handicrafts, food and drinks. The city also has shopping malls for all tastes and budgets.
Considering the distance, you can spend weekends in the Serra Gaúcha, the state wine region, or on the beach. In the summer the heat in the capital is intolerable and everyone who can travel do it.
As for security, I once said to a colleague from Rio that it was a quiet city in this regard and she came back cursing me because someone told her not to enter a street in Cidade Baixa. I was robbed in the city once and experienced an attempted robbery on another occasion, both during the day. At night I never went through dangerous situations, even when I came back from college or a modeling course on foot, or so many other times that I walked around there late at night. Maybe that's why I see the city as safe even though I was mugged once.
The city has several universities and many companies, in addition to having many large national companies based in nearby municipalities.
The public transport system could be better. It's just average. The public health system, at least in the care in the region where I lived, I considered very good. Being used to private consultations and hearing so many criticisms of the public healthcare system, I imagined something much worse, but every time I needed the service, it was considerably quick. Not immediately as in private consultations, but very fast and I had good doctors, psychologists and dentists there.
In the first year, I met a lot of people, at university, at Soka Gakkai and on the internet. One of these people invited me to Orkut, which at the time was a social network where we only entered by invitation and it was all in English. And on Orkut I met many more people and solidified my name as a fashion and style professional, for having a very active participation in communities related to such themes. Gauchos are reserved, but when they become friends, they are good friends.
Some people say that Porto Alegre is an expensive city. Although I lived there in middle class neighborhoods, I was able to maintain a reasonably comfortable lifestyle with an amount equivalent to what I would spend in Uberlândia if I paid rent.
I did not get to rent real estate in the capital, but I know that they usually require the guarantor to be a gaucho. But there are other forms of guarantee that they accept for rent to outsiders as well.

🇬🇧 Tips to live in Montes Claros, Brazil
Today I’m going to give tips to anyone thinking of living in Montes Claros, the city where I was born. Montes Claros is the largest city in the north of Minas Gerais and attracts students and professionals from all over the region, from southern Bahia and also many foreigners. People from the highest social classes have studied English since childhood, at least those who are now forty years old or less, so most upper class people can communicate well in English. The Italian, on the other hand, I don't know any school in the city that teaches. Spanish is also taught in several language schools.
The city is horizontal, with few buildings. Thus, most of the available residential properties are likely to be houses. There are apartments, but they are not as common as in larger cities.
Cultural and leisure options are relatively limited. The city has several clubs where you can enjoy pleasant hours with family or friends, and in one of them you can even camp. In these clubs, in June there are the June festivals that move the city. Each weekend of the month has a party in one of them. As the elite frequent the same places and June is the “cold” month in the city, they buy new clothes to go to each of these parties. And there is also the agricultural exhibition at about the same time, where you will see the same people, as a good part of the local elite is a cattle rancher or has rancher friends.
The city has two shopping malls, the structure for tourism is very bad, it has relatively few restaurants and nothing super exotic. Last time I went there, I didn't find even Japanese food yet. But there are some good bars and pizzerias on “Avenida”, which is a stretch of Avenida Deputado Esteves Rodrigues between Tupiniquins Street and José Corrêa Machado Avenue. If someone says to you "let's have a (beer) on the avenue", it is to go to a bar on this stretch of avenue. Get ready because going to Avenida is an event. Pretend you're going to Paris Fashion Week, wear your best clothes, because people go there to see and be seen.
The city has some large supermarkets, but a lot of products that we find in capitals will not be found there. This week, an acquaintance of mine said that she doesn't find fresh mushrooms in the city, just pickled ones. But there are also things, such as pequi and carne de sol, which in other regions of the country are difficult to find (pequi is found in all the cities of the cerrado. Carne de sol, no).
The cost of living is low (well, renting a house shouldn't be too cheap, but it's not cheap anywhere) and people are very friendly to outsiders.
The biggest flaw I see in the city is that the tourist structure is ridiculous. There are few daily commercial flights arriving in the city, and by land to Belo Horizonte, the nearest capital, the trip is long and the road is bad. There is apparently no interest from local politicians and businesspeople to change that. The hotels are few and most have websites with extremely poor navigation, as well as locations that are not very attractive.
The opportunities for visionary entrepreneurs are many, as the city is large and deserves a lot that no company currently offers.
Currently, it is a big city for those who are used to small towns.
I recommend having a car or motorcycle to get around the city. There are taxis and mototaxis, as well as buses, but bus routes leave many regions out. From my grandmother's house, in an upscale neighborhood, I spent half an hour walking to the center. By bus I had to walk fifteen minutes and the total trip usually took half an hour, including waiting for the bus. If you live near the center, cycling is also a good option. The climate is hot and it rarely rains. And from time to time there are earthquakes in the city.
If you have business in Montes Claros (or anywhere else in the world) and want to post them on the blog, send me a message introducing the company. If you think about opening a company or improving the company you already manage, schedule your consultation with me. And if you have additional tips or doubts about the experience of living in the city, comment. If you appreciate these tips, pay me a coffee: https://ko-fi.com/nycka
