🇬🇧 Cultural nomadism - a lifestyle

🇬🇧 The monuments men

For me, art and culture always were essential values. During this global pandemic (coronavirus) I see the importance of these elements in our daily lives much stronger. Observe how many lives of your favourite artists and how many series and films you watched, how much time you’re spending playing video games, the opportunities of virtual visits to museums and touristic destinations and so on.

Today I’d like to talk about “The monuments men”, a movie directed by George Clooney and full of stars on its cast. The movie is about a group that, during the second world war had the mission to find and saves pieces of art that the Nazis were stealing to destroy.

The movie shows how important art is for our culture and history. In the beginning, the character Frank Stokes (Clooney) says no piece of art is worth the life of a man. During the operation he changes his mind and this change for me is the most important part of the movie.

The cast is fantastic, the story is interesting, specially for seeing war from a different point of view, putting the value of art for our history as a crucial point. The movie is not new, it was launched on 2014, but only recently I had the opportunity to watch it. The movie is touching, sensible, sagacious and worthy two hours of our time to know a bit about something that really happened, through the lenses of cinema.

I read negative criticism about the movie but mostly from people who are unable to understand the importance of art in our lives and maybe these people were expecting a normal war movie full of blood. This is a movie more full of brain and sensibility, it’s more about strategy and intuition than battles. And it happens full of men on screen, only Cate Blanchet as feminine appearance.

There’s one detail I must anticipate and I don’t think is a spoiler, but you’re free to stop reading now if you prefer.

The last scene, shows older Stokes with a child. Watching the movie I could understand it was one of the main characters, but although the “actor” is Clooney’s father, Nick Clooney, I only identified it was Stokes for sure after reading the full cast somewhere, after to watch the movie. 😁 Well, I didn’t know anything about Nick Clooney up to that reading. Possibly for people from the USA this is obvious. But I was born in Brazil, George Clooney is brunette and his father’s skin is white. But this was the only confused moment for me watching this, and it didn’t compromise the movie.

🇬🇧 Music is life

I love music, since I was a child. As a little girl, I studied ballet, flute and piano. I interrupted the 3 for different reasons. The piano, which I liked, I stopped because I didn't have one at home to practice and it is very frustrating not to evolve between one class and another. The other two must have been my family's choices. I don't remember ever really enjoying ballet or flute. At 14 I took guitar lessons. But I ended up quitting after a while for not being able to make “eyelashes” (I really have no idea about the name of this in english). The second string was always a little loose because my finger made a downward curve in the larger joint and an upward curve in the smaller joint. 👽 And to be more encouraging, the teacher was playing a lot of songs from Legião Urbana and my throat suffered to sing such low tones.

My first CD was Grave Dancers Union, by Soul Asylum. I saw the Runaway Train video on TV and decided that I wanted the album. Before that I had a Skid Row vinyl. When I was in business school I started listening to more Metallica and Iron Maiden and I discovered Angra, Helloween and Apocalyptica, who released their first album doing Metallica covers with cellos at that time. I heard these bands under the influence of my cousin. Over time, I continued to listen to Helloween a lot, and it's been one of my favorite bands ever since. The others over time I listened less, and I got back in touch with Apocalyptica a few weeks ago. I will speak of this in another text.

One of the things I most wanted when I left my hometown, Montes Claros, was to be able to go to international shows. In Brazil they only happened in capitals at that time. It is only a few years ago that some cities in the interior started to receive this type of show (in Montes Claros they still don't happen). I started to live this when I moved to Porto Alegre. Without planning, I ended up living close to Bar Opinião, where all international metal shows took place in the city in 2004 and 2005. And whenever I saw that a foreigner band would play there, if I didn't know, I tried to know something and if I found at least  an interesting song I was going to. 😁 So, I discovered Children of Bodom, Primal Fear and several other bands. I also met Evergrey, who will do a live broadcast on Facebook on next June 27 at 9 PM CET. They opened a Pain of Salvation show at the time.

The first year in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul was full of opportunities to see interesting bands live. I went to countless shows alone because I didn't know anyone who had the same musical taste. Until, at the end of 2004, Nightwish went to play in the city and an old acquaintance of mine with whom I had not had contact in a long time, appeared on Orkut and ended up organizing a fan meeting in the Parque da Redenção before the show, and several people present  they also went to the airport to welcome the band. From then on this group started to meet frequently in the park and also in other shows. That show was part of the band's last tour with Tarja Turunen on vocals.

From the first months in the city, before the Nightwish show, the most striking shows for me were:

  • Primal Fear.  Seeing “the healer” performed live was a great experience. It's a song that I still enjoy today.
  • Sepultura. An extraordinary show, but it was tense to be able to enjoy the show not being carried away by the crowd. Thanks for the 3 guys in front of me that protected me from that.
  • Children of Bodom: I used to think of the keyboard as a lighter piano. Then I heard “War of razors” live.

At this stage, and for some time, I had no interest in the personal lives of artists. Then I started to realize that our personal life is the raw material of our creative work and I also became interested in the history of the bands I like most and in the personal life of their musicians. Personal contact with musicians and individual contact over the internet, in exchanging messages, started to gain more and more importance in 2005 when this started to be part of my life. And the good thing about talking to musicians who already have a solid career is that we have a lot in common in terms of interests and way of seeing the world. And that explains why some songs have a special meaning for me. The bands that I continue to like, the ones that I hear the most nowadays, have songs that inspire me, that make me feel stronger, and the musicians' own attitude is one of growth, evolution. Music often communicates more than I can verbalize. That's why I'm so interested in resuming my studies and going to music school. To get where words are insufficient to express.

🇧🇷 Música é vida

Eu amo música, desde criança. Ainda bem pequena estudei balé, flauta doce e piano.

Eles abriram um show do Pain of Salvation na época.

    • Primal Fear.
Então ouvi “War of razors” ao vivo.

🇬🇧 Tips for those who want to live alone

I was asked how to know if you are prepared to live alone and what monthly income a person should have to take this step. On income, it will depend on the lifestyle you want to maintain. But I will give tips, in this text, to calculate. About being prepared, I recommend that instead of leaving your parents' house directly to live alone, share an apartment with someone, to take over the responsibilities of solo flying, but sharing them with others. After living a year or so, go solo.

To live alone you will need to set up the property (furnish, decorate, etc.). Visit some e-commerce to see home appliances, furniture, etc. to calculate how much you will need for this purpose. You must also decide whether to use your own property that you already own, buy one or rent. In the last two options, it is also up to you to choose the location, taking into account your lifestyle and the facilities you want.

Here on the blog I already posted a checklist of a well equipped kitchen that can help you calculate this part. You can eliminate the items you find expendable. Eating out is an option, but I suggest having at least the basics in the kitchen, to make coffee or warm dinner. Always eating out, including breakfast, is very practical, but it can be quite sickening depending on the options you have close to home.

You can have a washing machine and a clothes dryer (or one that does both), use the building's laundry (if any) or a nearby laundry. A large basket to store dirty clothes is also necessary, regardless of your choice for washing them.  Some washers do not support washing bedding, especially comforters.

Bed, wardrobes (if not built into the property), table, chairs and sofa (I like the idea of a room with a beautiful rug and ottomans too) are other things you should include in the calculation, as well as sets of sheets, blankets, pillows, cushions, tablecloths, vacuum cleaner... Look at your current home and see what seems expendable and what can be added to improve your lifestyle.

Costs with transportation, leisure, water, electricity, gas, internet, among others, must be included in your spreadsheet.

In 2004, living in Porto Alegre (a big city in the south of Brazil), sharing an apartment, going frequently to international shows (tickets at R$ 40) and ordering restaurant food two or three times a week (cooking at home rarely), I spent R$ 1500 on all expenses (rent, food, transportation, college tuition, leisure, etc.).  Today, to have the same lifestyle, living alone in a brazilian capital, you would need R$ 8000 or more, as tickets to shows cost more than R$ 100, and each meal in good restaurants also costs that amount, in addition to all other costs that went up  in the period.

I hope that the coronavirus quarantine experience has also given you good tips on what you need to have a real home, a place where it is pleasant to be and not just a place to sleep and bathe. If you liked the tips, buy me a coffee: https://ko-fi.com/nycka

🇬🇧 Droopy eyes

I have slightly droopy eyes. Their outer corner is slightly below the height of the inner corner. And almost all beautiful people of both sexes usually have straight or almond-shaped eyes (outer corner just above the height of the inner corner). And then, if you, man or woman, have the same characteristic as I do for eye shape, maybe you live, as I lived for some time, a feeling of lack of beauty references to highlight this part of the face.
What I do on a daily basis is to contour my eyes, inside, with black pencil. The top part I outline only the half closest to the outer corner.  The bottom part I outline from corner to corner.  This is something that men and women can do.
I also use gold or white pencils sometimes.  I haven't tried other colors yet, but they should look good, if they match the personal color of the wearer. The white pencil greatly increases the size of the eyes and gives a very dramatic effect. The gold increases in a more natural way.
When using eyeshadow I also use darker colours on the outer corner and light colors on the inner corner. I always blend well, leaving a half centimeter on each side with only the pure color of that corner, but making the blend smoother in the middle, with a beautiful transition, a nice gradient. You can use more than two colours. The combination I use more often is a coffee brown shade on the outer corner, an orange in the middle and a pearly shade on the inner corner. I do not recommend this colour combination for those with light eyes (blue or green). Using shadows with good pigmentation is essential. It is better for the colours to be visible.
I believe that learning to value our natural beauty is generally more interesting than seeking to have a different beauty, as appearance is also related to characteristics of our personality.
If you value your droopy eyes in a different way than mine, comment how you do this.

É melhor as cores aparecerem bem.

🇬🇧 Empathy

It is an immense cliché to say that empathy is doing to others what we would like them to do to us. The other is the other. His needs and expectations are different. And only by knowing each other well are we able to exercise real empathy. Without that, we must use some wisdom in human relationships, with awareness of our humanity and that of the other.
I was asked a question about the importance of emotional control in the workplace and I remembered a case that I experienced in college, which illustrates well this issue that empathy should not be doing to others what we would like them to do with us.
I was studying advertising during the last semester and we had a work in group to finish. I had a different team than my usual one who accompanied me throughout the course, because two of them owed some optional subjects. And in the group there was a girl in an advanced state of pregnancy. I am easy with male friendships, because I can usually be very direct and nobody is offended by anything. And I had no idea how to deal with a pregnant person. Doing what I would like them to do to me in the same situation, I suggested saving her from activities that required more physical effort. And she started crying and saying that I treated her as an invalid.  🤦🏻‍♀️ An extra comment is worth it: since I was very young I have the notion that intellectual work is worth more than physical work, and the team had eight people. If I think she could stay in more intellectual work, that should be a source of pride and not complaining tears. Okay, I have no idea how hormones can make a pregnant woman freak out.
The point is: we had different points of view and expectations regarding work. In fact, the differences were many because we had very different work systems. This ended up directing me to always work with what I believe in, with what makes my heart flutter, because I know it is complicated for me to work when there is no synergy with my work team, when I do not believe in the brand and when the way of working is very different from what I consider ideal for that purpose. This wisdom and maturity to select jobs and friendships in adulthood, respecting individuality, needs and expectations, is important. And what I understand as true empathy, which involves understanding or perceiving the other's expectations and needs, is only possible with real connection, friendship, closeness.

🇧🇷 Empatia

🇬🇧 I don’t go backpacking

I don't go backpacking. Sometimes people ask me for tips on this type of travel and cheap trips, but it's not my thing. I have a travel experience that led me to prefer comfort and privacy above all when I travel.

When I was studying business administration, I took a vacation trip to Porto Seguro, a beautiful city on the Brazilian coast, in the region where the country was discovered by the Portuguese. I had already been there on another occasion. This time, I went with my family on an excursion. And I regretted it a few hours after we left home. I lived at the time in Montes Claros, about 850km from Porto Seguro. We went by bus. And before the bus reached Salinas, 280km from the origin, it broke 3 times! The third was night, and we were there on the road, in the middle of nowhere. I cried. I asked to be dropped off in the first city so I could take a bus back home. We hadn't made a quarter of the trip and there were so many problems that it seemed impossible to reach the destination. That was the last time the bus broke down.  But the accommodation proved to be as bad as the route. We stayed in an inn where many people shared the same room and had no private bathroom. This is totally unacceptable to me.

The trip had fun times, but staying in a hostel or anywhere I have to sleep with strangers and sharing a bathroom with a lot of people is something I prefer to avoid.

At that time, I even went to concerts on the beach at night, which I had not gone from the previous trip. But ... traveling is only worth it with some comfort and a lot of privacy.

🇬🇧 About segregation

In the face of the general uprising against racism, I must say that I am against racism, but I am also against blacks who think that every white person is racist, poor people who think that every rich person is an exploiter, mediocre and conservative rich people, radical religious and all kinds of radical people  who thinks that anyone who thinks differently must be wrong for her to be right.
In recent years, many things are contributing to a fragile and chaotic society. From the excess of self-help content that has been produced to the ways in which people defend causes such as combating racism, machismo, homophobia and even vegetarianism and veganism. Everything has been polarized and this idiotic polarization is getting no one anywhere. Only in children's stories is the enemy 100% evil and always external. In real life it is a bit different, and even Sidarta (the historical Buddha), back in India, was aware about this for thousands of years.
It is pathetic and shameful to see certain postures. There is no employee without a boss and for a company to be large it needs employees. Each intelligent person develops talents and becomes useful to society through his work. Increasingly, artificial intelligence and machines are taking up job vacancies, but that didn't start yesterday. It comes from the times of the industrial revolution. So it is important to develop talent for creative and strategic work and go far beyond technique.
If someone's nationality, skin color, gender, sexual orientation or religion speaks louder than their talent, there is something wrong. I was born in Brazil, but I am not obliged to behave as the average Brazilian behaves (thankfully, because the average Brazilian is a shame). I am a woman, but in my field of work no man does my job better than me. Not other women. Sexual orientation is also not something we have to prove out there. It does not concern anyone but ourselves.
For many things in this life we need support from other people. I myself am looking for support and sponsorship to study music abroad, a childhood love. If the reader can collaborate, I will love it! But they are individual struggles, they do not belong to all members of a group, most of the time.  Majority is not everyone.
There are many other things that are internal struggles, to discover where that feeling of inferiority came from or what talents I lack to change my condition. And with so many external sources of self-help and people fighting for minorities, this internal struggle is neglected by many. The radicals I mentioned at the beginning of the text look for culprits, but do not do any kind of self-analysis. They just think they are right and they own the truth. And they become a bunch of limited bores.
The internal struggles are hard, terrible, but we can only find real peace when facing these battles.  Are there enemies outside?  Yes, because there are a lot of selfish and spiritually miserable people out there. But without facing the battle against yourself and your inner ghosts, every external battle will be lost.
As much as the traditional media insists on setting the stage for idiots because their main interest is to have an audience and most people are culturally limited and interested in gossip and crime, there are interesting people with different attitudes in this world.
From the point of view of marketing, to dialogue with those who think differently than what the traditional media propagates, it is necessary to think more about content and less about numbers.
Nobody agrees 100% with everything that another person does and thinks, but it is absolutely necessary that there is respect for differences, the limits of the other and for yourself.

🇬🇧 Travel and foreign languages

Is it worth investing in travel and studying foreign languages?
I could answer with an emphatic yes. But I prefer to ask a few questions so that you can find out if your travel experiences were worthwhile, if your future trips can be used to the fullest or if your profile does not align with the maximum use of the experience, and others to reflect on the use of foreign languages  in your life. Then I will do a more in-depth assessment.
  1. What are your long-term professional goals?
  2. What is your interest in the culture of countries where the language you are considering studying is spoken as an official language?
  3. How open to diversity and different ways of thinking and acting are you?
  4. What do you know about the culture of the place you want to visit?
  5. What is different, exciting and unique about that place?
  6. How is the climate of the place? Are you prepared to face the climatic conditions in the period you plan to be there?
  7. Have you read my text on how to create your own travel itinerary here on the blog?

When we invest in something, we want to have a return. Not necessarily a financial return. Most people I know who speak at least one foreign language well are because they have a cultural interest in communicating better with speakers of that language. If your motivation is not linked to the interest of opening your head to new cultures, the fruits that you will reap may not be very juicy. Unfortunately, many english speakers feel too comfortable because everyone knows english, so they don’t try other languages, but embracing this attitude is proper for narrow minded people.
In the case of travel, there are those who travel just to enjoy a beach without compromise or to shop, but these motivations, although valid, do not add value to life. Knowing sights, in itself, is also of little value. What is the use of going to Paris and seeing Monalisa at the Louvre if you do not notice the differences between a mediocre work and a genius work? See just because it is a mandatory stop, something that is on the itinerary of every tourist and every travel agency? Don't be so muggle! Saying in a circle of friends that you went to Paris and visited the Louvre makes no difference, unless your friends don't usually travel. And if you need friends so mediocre to feel on top, your ego is too fragile. You need to evolve more as a human being.
What brings return in travel is to look for what is culturally interesting and unique in that place and to have a mentality of constant search for cultural enrichment. Do you want to go to the Louvre? Be consistent and get used to visiting museums in your city, exhibitions by different artists, then also visit other museums in other cities, observe the differences between the works, the details, follow artists on social networks and observe how their work is made. Each artwork has a story behind it.  Hence the importance of doing your own planning. In addition, making all travel decisions without agency assistance is an excellent exercise in self-confidence and maturity.
I mentioned the Louvre, but for any tourist spot, in any country, it is interesting to note the reasons why that place or monument is a tourist spot. I have been to many small towns with images that resemble Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro in a smaller size. What differentiates those statues from the famous Rio monument?
A cultural nomad is the one who makes the most of each place, enriching himself with the local culture, making friends with people from all over the world, exercising his brain without leaving his physical appearance aside. Are you making the most of the opportunities that open up when travelling?
