🇬🇧 Introduction to brazilian music

Today is the day to talk about some Brazilian musicians and composers that are worth getting to know for an immersion in the best part of Brazilian culture. Although the list is numbered, it is not an order of importance. I won't go into the merits of agreeing or disagreeing with the content of the songs of some of the artists who have socially and politically critical music. I believe that music, as with fashion, tends to be a reflection of its time and is certainly a reflection of the artists' experiences, even in the cases of artists who create a character for the stage. The songs have their original names, sometimes with translation to english between parenthesis.

1. Chiquinha Gonzaga. Germany has Clara Schurman, Brazil has Chiquinha Gonzaga, who is not one bit behind Clara in courage and daring. Her music is also very significant. Perhaps music is that perfect form of expression for strong, avant-garde people. One of her best-known songs is “Atraente” (attractive).
2. Heitor Villa-Lobos. Another with compositions rich in beauty and sensitivity. He dedicated himself to creating classical music with a very Brazilian identity. He composed, among others, the “Bachianas Brasileiras”.
3. Pixinguinha. His best known song is “Carinhoso” (tender).
4. Ary Barroso. He composed, among others, “Aquarela do Brasil”.
5. Noel Rosa. One of the great voices of the past. Author of songs such as “Com que roupa” (with what clothes) and “arranjei um fraseado” (I got a phrasing).
6. Cartola. One of the greatest Brazilian samba singers. Author of hits like “as rosas não falam” (the roses don't talk).
7. Luiz Gonzaga. The king of the baião. It's almost impossible to hear his songs without dancing (if you're not Brazilian, read the other posts I wrote about the parties of June and plan your trip now to learn how to dance baião and forró in the most traditional Brazilian parties. Sing songs like “A vida do viajante” (the life of a traveler), “asa branca” (White Wing) and “pagode russo” (Russian Pagoda).
8. Adoniran Barbosa. Author of several sambas from the past, including “Saudosa Maloca” and “Trem das onze” (“train of eleven o’clock”, one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar).
9. Vinicius de Moraes. If you've never heard “Girl from Ipanema” you don't know anything about Brazil. And this is just one of the poetinha's many successes (the original name of the song is “garota de Ipanema”).
10. Lupicínio Rodrigues. He composed, among other successes, the anthem of his favourite football team, Grêmio de Porto Alegre. A beautiful song with characteristics of strong gaucho music.
11. Dorival Caymmi. He composed, among other hits, “O que que a baiana tem”, immortalized in the voice of Carmen Miranda.
12. Tim Maia. Author of hits that span different generations. You will hardly meet a Brazilian who has never heard songs by Tim Maia such as “gostava tanto de você” (I liked you so much), “Descobridor dos sete mares”, “do Leme ao Pontal” or “Primavera” (spring), among others.
13. Tom Jobim. Another one of those mandatory names. Author of great hits such as “Girl from Ipanema” (in partnership with Vinícius de Morais) and “Só tinha de ser com você”, among others.
14. Joao Gilberto. The creator of Bossa Nova. He composed, among other hits, “Sampa” and “Chega de Saudade”.
15. Baden Powell.  Author of hits such as “Canto de Ossanha”.
16. Roberto Carlos. Most of his fans have aged with him. In his youth he was the king of the Young Guard. Nowadays he composes romantic songs and performs for audiences of mature people.
17. Erasmo Carlos. One of the pioneers of Brazilian rock. Author of hits such as “é preciso saber viver” (It's necessary to know how to live), “Gatinha Manhosa”, “é proibido fumar” (It's forbidden to smoke) and others, several of them re-recorded by other artists like Skank, Titãs and Léo Jaime.
18. Gilberto Gil. Author of hits such as “Esperando na Janela” (from the soundtrack of the movie “Eu, Tu, Eles”), “aquele abraço”, “toda menina baiana” (Every Bahian girl), “Andar com fé”, and “Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo” which was the opening song of the television series based on the children's work by Monteiro Lobato.
19. Milton Nascimento. Nicknamed Bituca. One of the most beautiful male voices in Brazilian music. His career is full of beautiful hits such as “canção da America” (Song of America), “quem sabe isso quer dizer amor” (Maybe that means love), “coração de estudante” (Student heart), “tudo que você podia ser” (Everything you could be), “nos bailes da vida”, “caçador de mim” (Hunter of me), “fé cega, faca amolada” (Blind Faith, sharp knife) and many others. Required in any good Brazilian music playlist. Listen without moderation!
20. Caetano Veloso. A well-known name in Brazilian music, he is the author of hits such as “Sozinho”, “Alegria, Alegria”, “London, London”, “A luz de Tieta”, among others.
21. Chico Buarque. His biggest hits were composed in the 70s. He is almost 80 years old. He composed, among others, “o que será”, “apesar de você” (despite you), “construção” (Construction), “cálice” and “cotidiano”.
22. Maria Bethania. Owner of a beautiful voice, one of her great successes is “onde estará o meu amor”.
23. Belchior. Among the compositions you should listen to are “apenas um rapaz latino americano” (Just a Latin American Boy) and “como nossos pais” (Like Our Parents). 
24. Alceu Valença. Among his greatest hits are “Morena Tropicana” and “La belle de Jeur”.
25. Toquinho. A soft voice very familiar to Brazilians over thirty years of age as the composer and performer of “Aquarela”, which in the 1980s was the soundtrack of the advertising campaign for a brand of school products such as coloured pencils.
26. Djavan. Author of hits like “se...” (If...), “nem um dia” (Not a day), “eu te devoro” (I devour you), “meu bem querer” and “Oceano” (ocean).
27. Rita Lee. She started as the female voice of “Os Mutantes”, currently works as a soloist. Among her greatest hits are “Ovelha negra” (black sheep), “desculpe o auê”, “balada do louco” (“Ballad of the madman” with Os Mutantes) and “Ti ti ti”.
28. Cazuza. One of the best known names in Brazilian rock in the 80s. Like Freddie Mercury, he died young of AIDS. Among his hits are “Codinome Beija-Flor”, “exagerado” (Exaggerated), “o tempo não para” (Time doesn't stop), “faz parte do meu show” (It's part of my show), “Ideologia” (ideology) and “Bete Balanço”.
29. Renato Russo. Another great Brazilian artist taken by AIDS. Most of his successes were with the band Legião Urbana, although he has recorded solo albums. “Equilíbrio Distante”, despite its Portuguese name, is an album of songs in Italian. “The Stonewall celebration concert” is all in English. Among the songs in Portuguese stand out “Pais e Filhos”, “Eduardo e Mônica”, “mais uma vez” (Once more), “meninos e meninas” (Boys and Girls) among many others.
30. Marisa Monte. One of the most beautiful female voices in Brazil. Her hits include “vilarejo” (village), “cama” (bed), “na estrada” (On the road), “a sua” and many others.
31. Jorge Benjor. Author of hits such as “Chove chuva” (rain rain), “País tropical” (Tropical country) and “menina mulher da pele preta”.
32. Elis Regina. Her beautiful voice is in big hits such as “o bêbado e a equilibrista” (The drunk and the tightrope walker), “Como nossos pais” (Like our parents) and “Arrastão”.
33. Raul Seixas. He composed hits such as “Gita”, “Metamorfose ambulante” (Walking Metamorphosis), “Eu nasci há dez mil anos atrás” (I was born ten thousand years ago), “Medo da Chuva” (Fear of the Rain) and “Sapato 36” (Shoe 36. 36 is the smaller size for adult shoes in Brazil).
34. Hermeto Pascoal. Among his hits are “nem um talvez” (with Miles Davis) and “Pernambuco falando para o mundo” (Pernambuco speaking to the world).
35. Sivuca. Famous accordionist, conductor and multi-instrumentalist, his repertoire includes songs like “Feira de Mangaio” and “Adeus, Maria Fulô”.
36. Ney Matogrosso. Between his work with the group “Secos e molhados” and his solo career, at the age of 80, the artist has in his repertoire songs such as “Tigresa”, “que fim levaram todas as flores” and “Por debaixo dos panos” (under the covers).
37. Carmen Miranda. She was born in Portugal, but Brazilians don't care about that. For a long time she was the face of Brazil to the world. Among the famous songs we have “Disseram que voltei americanizada” (they said I came back americanized), “O que que a baiana tem” (what the baiana has) and “Arca de Noé” (Noah's ark).
38. Ze Ramalho. He has hits like “Chão de giz” (Chalk Floor), “Avôhai”, “Entre a serpente e a estrela” (Between the Serpent and the Star) and “Admirável gado novo” (Admirable New Cattle) and an unmistakable voice.
39. Lulu Santos. A Brazilian rock star of the 80's, he has among his biggest hits “apenas mais uma de amor”, “Um certo alguém”(a certain someone), and “Como uma onda” (like a wave).
40. Clara Nunes. My earliest musical memories have the voice of Clara Nunes singing “Morena de Angola”. But she also sang “O mar serenou” (the sea calmed), “Guerreira” (warrior) and many others.
41. Martinho da Vila. One of the most famous names in samba. Among his famous songs are “Madalena do Jucú”, “Devagar, devagarinho” and “canta, canta minha gente”.
42. Lô Borges. One of the founders of Clube da Esquina, a group of artists from Minas Gerais that marked Brazilian music in the 70s and 80s. His repertoire includes hits such as “Trem de doido” and “O trem azul” (the blue train).
43. Herbert Vianna. He began to be successful on the national scene in the 80s and not even an accident in 2001 that left him paraplegic took him out of the picture. Along with the band “Os Paralamas do Sucesso” there are songs like “Oculos”, a hit from the 80's (which a TV network used in an article I participated in my days as a personal stylist talking about... glasses!), “Lourinha Bombril ”, “Saber amar”, and the beautiful “seja você” (“be yourself”, that song that only tells the truth).
44. Sepultura. Band originally formed by brothers Igor and Max Cavalera, Paulo Júnior and Wagner Lamounier. The best-known line-up is the first three members and Andreas Kisser, who joined as second guitarist when Max took over the vocals after Lamounier left. The lineup changed and today has the American Derrik Green on vocals and no Cavalera, but the band continues to be a reference around the world. Like Villa-Lobos, they brought a Brazilian identity to music. Not classical music, but metal.
45. Gonzaguinha. Son of Luiz Gonzaga, he followed a different musical path. There are songs like “Eu apenas queria que você soubesse” (I just wish you knew), “Um homem também chora” (A man cries too) and “Não dá mais pra segurar” (I can't hold on anymore).

For foreigners, I notice that many songs by the above artists are difficult to translate because they use possible symbolisms in the Portuguese language to refer to something. Mainly those hits from the period of the dictatorship in Brazil, but other songs that have nothing to criticise the government can also be difficult to understand. Try to understand the origins of each song and its main theme by artist rather than looking for translations. Or just listen without worrying about what they say.

Hoje é dia de falar de alguns músicos e compositores brasileiros que vale a pena conhecer para uma imersão na melhor parte da cultura brasileira. Embora a lista seja numerada, não é uma ordem de importância. Não vou entrar no mérito de concordar ou discordar dos conteúdos das músicas de alguns dos artistas que têm músicas de crítica social e política. Acredito que a música, como acontece com a moda, tende a ser reflexo de seu tempo e certamente é o reflexo das experiências dos artistas, mesmo nos casos de artistas que criam um personagem para os palcos.

1. Chiquinha Gonzaga. A Alemanha tem Clara Schurman, o Brasil tem Chiquinha Gonzaga, que não fica nem um pouco atrás de Clara em coragem e ousadia. Sua música também é muito significativa. Talvez a música seja aquela forma de expressão perfeita para pessoas fortes e avant-garde. Uma de suas canções mais conhecidas é “Atraente”.
2. Heitor Villa-Lobos. Outro com composições ricas em beleza e sensibilidade. Dedicou-se a criar música erudita com uma identidade bem brasileira. Compôs, entre outras, as “Bachianas Brasileiras”.

A formação mudou e hoje tem o americano Derrik Green nos vocais e nenhum Cavalera, mas a banda continua sendo referência em todo o mundo. Como Villa-Lobos, eles trouxeram uma identidade brasileira para a música. Não a música erudita, mas o metal.
45. Gonzaguinha. Filho de Luiz Gonzaga, seguiu um caminho musical diferente. Tem músicas como “Eu apenas queria que você soubesse”, “um homem também chora” e “Não dá mais pra segurar”.

Para estrangeiros aviso que muitas músicas dos artistas acima são de difícil tradução porque eles usam de simbolismos possíveis na língua portuguesa para referir-se a algo. Principalmente aqueles sucessos do período da ditadura no Brasil, mas outras canções que não têm nada de crítica ao governo também podem ser de difícil compreensão. Procure entender as origens de cada canção e seu tema principal de acordo com o artista em vez de buscar traduções. Ou simplesmente ouça sem preocupar-se com o que dizem.

Vamos descobrir pintores e escultores finlandeses hoje. A lista a seguir não tem a pretensão de listar apenas os melhores ou mais famosos. Não conheço arte finlandesa tanto assim ainda. Então talvez, por ignorância, eu omita algum nome que qualquer criança finlandesa de dez anos conheça. Se eu fizer isso, inclua os artistas mais reconhecidos nos comentários. 🇬🇧 What is buddhist enlightenment

Let's talk about well-being. What is the enlightenment that Buddhists talk about so much?

Imagine that you have inherited a house that has been standing (not renting or selling) and without electricity for years. Until that moment you lived for rent in a tiny apartment in a dangerous neighbourhood and the house is so large, in that place you always wanted to live and thought it was impossible... The condition for living there and enjoying the inheritance is to make the necessary renovations.

And when you turn on the light and enter you are faced with everything that is there. Garbage that the former owners left behind, cobwebs, very well-maintained and beautiful antique furniture (perhaps rare!), and much more. Things that must be kept and taken care of, others that must be discarded to make room for what the house deserves. And after cleaning the house, painting the walls, doing all the renovations, you'll still have to buy a few more things to make the house look the way you want it. A rug here, a dinner set there, a little art, and every detail will make this house more cozy and make you want to live there.

Now think that this house is the life you always wanted to have. Reform is the reform of your thoughts and attitudes, it is reforming your mentality and your way of acting. And there are thoughts and attitudes that we inherit from family, the media or society and limit us, and that's why it's better to discard them to make room for new beliefs and attitudes that help us to be who we want to be, better people, with more true friends, better works, etc. And so many other thoughts that are positive, that make us stronger and already contribute to being who we want to be. Without them, we wouldn't even have the will to “clear the house” of our mind, face up to what makes us good and what makes us bad, and it's there, within our reach. We would prefer to stay in the small, rented property away from the paradise where the house is located.

There is a law of cause and effect that governs the universe. If you don't “renovate the house” you can't live the life of your dreams, or maybe you can for a while, but soon you lose.

Buddhism is a philosophy that directs us so that we can become who we want to be in order to have the life we ​​want to have. It's not overnight. Cleaning your mind takes work, it can take a lot of time, it depends on your commitment and how much garbage is there.

Lighting is the act of turning on the light in that home of the initial example each day and engaging in what needs to be done for it to be a warm, welcoming home. It's being able to see every limiting thought you have and push it away, replace it with a different thought (which may also be limiting, but you change it again as soon as you see it). It's having the courage to distance ourselves from people who only slow down our lives and quit jobs that don't get us where we want to go. Enlightenment is being aware that you are the author of your own story, and if it's bad now it's because you've let a lot of rubbish accumulate and have a lot of work to do, but with honesty, persistence and patience you'll get what you want.

🇧🇷 O que é a iluminação budista

Vamos falar de bem-estar. O que é a iluminação que os budistas tanto falam?

Imagine que você herdou uma casa que está parada (sem alugar nem vender) e sem luz há anos. Até aquele momento você vivia de aluguel num apartamento pequenininho numa vizinhança perigosa e a casa é tão ampla, naquele lugar que você sempre quis viver e achava que era impossível... A condição para viver ali e usufruir da herança é fazer a reforma necessária.

E ao religar a luz e entrar você se depara com tudo que tem lá. Lixo que os antigos proprietários deixaram, teias de aranha, móveis antigos muito bem conservados e bonitos (talvez raros!), e muito mais. Coisas que devem ser mantidas e cuidadas, outras que devem ser descartadas pra dar espaço ao que a casa merece. E depois de limpar a casa, pintar as paredes, fazer todas as reformas, ainda terá de adquirir mais algumas coisas para a casa ficar como você quer. Um tapete aqui, um jogo de jantar ali, um pouco de arte, e cada detalhe vai tornar essa casa mais aconchegante e dando mais vontade de morar ali.

Agora pense que essa casa é a vida que você sempre quis ter. A reforma é a reforma dos seus pensamentos e atitudes, é reformar sua mentalidade e seu jeito de agir. E tem pensamentos e atitudes que herdamos da família, da mídia ou da sociedade e nos limitam, e por isso é melhor descartá-los para dar espaço a novas crenças e atitudes que nos ajudem a ser quem queremos ser, pessoas melhores, com amigos mais verdadeiros, trabalhos melhores, etc. E outros tantos pensamentos que são positivos, que nos fazem mais fortes e já contribuem pra sermos quem queremos ser. Sem eles, nem teríamos a vontade de “arrumar a casa” da nossa mente, encarar de frente o que nos faz bem e o que nos faz mal e está ali, ao nosso alcance. Iríamos preferir continuar no imóvel pequeno e alugado longe do paraíso onde está situada a casa.

Existe uma lei de causa e efeito que rege o universo. Se você não “reforma a casa” você não pode viver a vida dos seus sonhos, ou talvez até consiga por um tempo, mas logo perde.

O budismo é uma filosofia que nos direciona de forma que podemos nos tornar quem queremos ser para ter a vida que queremos ter. Não é do dia para a noite. Faxinar a mente dá trabalho, pode levar muito tempo, depende do seu empenho e de quanto lixo tem lá.

Iluminação é o ato de acender a luz daquela casa do exemplo inicial a cada dia e se empenhar no que precisa ser feito para ela ser um lar aconchegante, acolhedor. É ser capaz de enxergar cada pensamento limitante que temos e afastá-lo, substitui-lo por um pensamento diferente (que talvez também seja limitante, mas a gente troca de novo assim que percebe). É ter coragem de nos distanciarmos de pessoas que só atrasam nossa vida e sair de empregos que não nos levam onde queremos. Iluminação é ter consciência de que você é o autor de sua própria história, e se está ruim agora é porque você deixou muito lixo acumular e tem muito trabalho a fazer, mas com honestidade, persistência e paciência você vai conquistar o que deseja.

🇬🇧 My perfect pet-friendly hotel

My ideal pet friendly hotel has the following characteristics:

• It has a team that appreciates cats and dogs, knows how to treat them well and is well prepared.
• Have "do not disturb" signs and staff respecting them hang on the door handle so that they do not open the room when the guardian does not want to be disturbed or when the animal is alone. I left these "do not disturb" signs on a hotel door once and was woken up by the room maid trying to open the door, ignoring the sign!
• Allow cats and dogs with no restrictions on their size, time alone in the room or how many pets are in the room. The tutor knows how much space the animals need. I already had 3 cats and a dog in a 37 sqm apartment. A neighbour I had was raising a golden retriever in a slightly smaller apartment in the same building. Every pet owner knows what their pet needs.
• Allow animals to stay in the room with their guardian, but also have a separate kennel, so that they can interact with other animals housed in the place if the guardians wish and if the animal is used to a house with a courtyard, for example .
• Have scrapers, sandboxes (and sand to fill them in), pots for water and food, and pet beds.
• Carry out cleaning without restrictions. It is easier and friendlier for maids to vacuum apartments, removing hair, than to ban an animal from using sheets and towels which will hopefully be washed and sanitised before the next guest uses them.
• Offer the owner a shovel, plastic bags, cleaning cloths, toilet sand, and odour eliminator (or white vinegar mixed with baking soda) to clean dog litter or cat litter. Replenish these products daily with quantities appropriate to the needs of the four-legged guest.
• Having contact with good pet shops that sell pet food in small portions, with delivery service to the hotel.
• Encourage nearby businesses to accept animals, so that their 4-legged guests can walk more freely with their guardians.
• Have contacts from veterinary clinics and hospitals as well as pet sitters if tutors need these services.
• Do its best to make traveling with the pet a pleasure for the tutor and the animals.
• Shielded windows with 5 screen or less space between nodes. It doesn't even have to be all over the hotel. Create a cat-themed floor, as some hotels have non-smoking floors and include screens in all windows of this floor and spaces for a cat to go out into.

🇬🇧 11 movies with central LGBT+ characters you should know

Culture also includes the understanding of different universes, and this too is part of the theme of the previous text: dialogue.  So today there are 11 films with central characters who are LGBT +.

1. Tomboy: story of a little girl who lives in the house as a girl, and outside, among other children, she lives as a boy. Beautiful French film from 2011.

Drag queens Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) impress judges in a regional competition, securing seats on the Los Angeles national stage. When the two meet the pathetic transvestite Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Alberto Leguizamo), one of the losers of the night, the charming Vida and Noxeema decide to help the poor girl. 4. Wilde. 1997 film. 5. Gia. From 98 with Angelina Jolie in the main role. Gia Carangi leaves Philadelphia and moves to New York to become a model and immediately catches the attention of the powerful agent Wilhelmina Cooper. Her attitude and her beauty help her quickly rise to the fore of the fashion industry, but her persistent loneliness prompts her to try drugs like cocaine. She becomes involved in a love affair with Linda, a makeup artist.  However, after a while Linda begins to worry about Gia's drug use and gives her an ultimatum. Gia chooses the drug. The failed attempts at reconciliation with Linda and her mother Kathleen lead Gia to abuse heroin. But after finally ending her addiction after much effort, she contracts the AIDS virus from a needle containing contaminated blood and dies of AIDS complications in 86, age 26.

6. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. From 1994. Two drag queens, Anthony / Mitzi and Adam / Felicia, and a transsexual, Bernadette, are hired to perform in a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs, a resort town in the remote Australian desert. They travel aboard their bus, Priscilla.  Along the way they discover that the woman who hired them is Anthony's wife.  The bus breaks down and is repaired by Bob, who starts traveling with them.

9. L'Auberge Espagnole. From 2002. Shows the coexistence of people of different cultures and sexual orientations sharing an apartment in Barcelona.

10. Brokeback Mountain. 2005 movie about 2 cowboys falling in love with each other.
