What is the cost of the first month living in another city or country, considering a move where you will only take the essentials, such as your clothes that can be used in your new home? What about the monthly cost after that first month? Is it worth traveling with little luggage?
The answers to these questions depend on where you are going to live, the type of accommodation you choose and your lifestyle. And of course if you are planning to move in alone or with other people (family, boyfriend, friends, etc). In this text I will guide you on important points so that you can make a very accurate calculation of these costs. The text underlines the first month because, under the conditions described above, it is the month with the highest costs. Certainly the tips are also useful to get an idea of your next monthly cost.
First, assuming you know the city you are going to live in, define the type of accommodation. Will you live in a rental property? Are you planning to buy a property? Do you prefer to live in a boarding house? Maybe share an apartment with other people or rent a room? Define it and research the costs of the type of housing chosen in the city where you will live. Before deciding where to live, there are two useful ways: either you visit the city first to define your new home before taking your bags, or you go all at once and book a value in the budget to stay in a hotel until you define your next home. The second option, for those with little luggage, is cheaper. Since there are things you will only discover by living there, your experience as a tourist is not worth much.
Once you have defined the type of accommodation, you can plan what you will probably need, making a calculation based on the maximum needs you will have. If you are planning to rent a room, you may need the bedroom furniture, but it is unlikely that you will need to purchase furniture for other parts of the house, which makes the costs of this option remarkably low. You can probably only retire with your clothes and your computer. For the other options, you may need to purchase things like a refrigerator, stove, appliances, furniture for other rooms, and more.
We talked about the basics, now comes the part that most depends on you. Lifestyle. Will you have a car or will you use public transport? Does the chosen location have a garage or will you have to pay for parking (if you have a car)? Will you live in a city that needs a special vehicle permit? How often do you want to go out to parties, restaurants, cinemas, museums, etc.? What are the costs of this where you will live? And here I do not recommend having an "average". It is important to be aware of the costs of the types of places you like to go. The cost of a popular / inexpensive restaurant and an award-winning restaurant are very different. And it is unlikely that you will try both.
If you plan to take small luggage with you, your moving costs (travel + luggage transport) will be low, depending on where you are going to live (if it is really small luggage, just the normal cost of the trip). The further away the destination is, the less interesting it is to take furniture and other things you already own. To find out if it's worth it, research the shipping costs and the costs of buying everything at your destination.
If you are moving in with someone else, be it a friend, partner or family, some of these costs are multiplied by the number of people and others can be divided.
