Several companies closed their stores in Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. Recently, some Russian public figures made videos cutting their Chanel bags because the brand was one of those that closed its stores in the country. Many people are thinking about the Russian people, who do not necessarily support the invasion, and they forget another important point. It is about this other point that I will speak in this text.
One of the themes of this site is to undertake abroad and if a person decides to open a business in a certain country it may be due to cultural affinities, but it also involves the question of being in favour of the choices made by the government of that country, because when we have a company we pay taxes that fund local government decisions. The same is true when a multinational company has stores in a particular country. Thus, keeping a company in Russia at the present time means supporting the invasion of Ukraine, even if it is an indirect support, as it occurs through the payment of taxes. And considering that taxes are usually a percentage of profit, a luxury company's contribution to a government is quite large.
I will not judge the Russians who tore their bags. Perhaps they were paid by the government for this. Maybe they don't understand this point. There's no way to know.
The objective of this text is to make those who are thinking of investing in other countries, whether to start a company or to expand it, think about this aspect of evaluating the paths and trends of local government, in addition to cultural affinities and immediate benefits.
When we leave a country to study or because we find a job abroad, the motivation is usually our own well-being, and therefore, those who migrate for reasons other than investment or entrepreneurship do not think so much about the long-term scenario, and not always are aware that they too are supporting the government of their destination country.
If you don't support your country's government, should you move to another country? It is easy to say yes, but there are factors that can make the process difficult, such as the person's attachment to the family, fear of the unknown, not knowing other languages, etc. It's not always easy for entrepreneurs either. But it's like any relationship. If it hurts us or goes against our personal ethics, the ideal is to get out of the relationship as soon as possible.
