🇬🇧 Afghanistan for investors and entrepreneurs

In this text I will share useful information for entrepreneurs and investors open to investing abroad. Today I talk about priority sectors for investments in Afghanistan. In the next texts I will talk about other countries. Follow my social media profiles and include this site in your favourite feed reader so you don't miss any content.

The following information was accessed from websites of Afghan consulates abroad.

Agriculture

Agriculture remains critical to livelihoods in Afghanistan, generating a third of the country's GDP and supporting nearly 80% of its population. Afghanistan's climate is suitable for growing vegetables. The country is the origin of many crops such as raisins, pomegranates, pistachios and almonds.

A related sector to the agricultural sector is packaging, which offers great opportunities for investors. While demand for Afghan agricultural products is high, current packaging procedures are outdated and impede trade. Processing is another great investment opportunity. Due to the growing fruit and vegetable markets, the potential for processed agricultural products is enormous, including snack foods, fruit concentrates and fresh fruit jellies.

Construction Materials

The creation of a competitive national construction industry is a prerequisite for the reconstruction of Afghanistan. Currently, the sector is one of the fastest growing in the country. That's why demand for building materials is rapidly increasing in Afghanistan, making the market more attractive to foreign investors. For example, urban planners and government officials develop a new urban area in northern Kabul that will house around 1.5 million people.

Telecommunications

Major telecom service providers already supply the Afghan market sufficiently with increased competition and price pressures. While opportunities still exist for mobile service providers, the other areas of supply and services in the telecommunications sector represent a much more virgin market. Examples are: data processing, basic business processing operations, information and communication technologies, data transfer, process control and call centres.

Transportation and logistics

Afghanistan borders six neighbours – Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China and Pakistan – and is considered a land bridge connecting emerging markets in the Middle East, Central and South Asia. The country's large and growing market for transport and logistics services presents an opportunity for new suppliers. Early investors report modest upfront costs and low overheads, and even smaller operators are moving large volumes of cargo. Investments in the transport and logistics sector are vital for general economic development, as they will enable the transport and distribution of products throughout the national territory and to destinations abroad.
