🇬🇧 How an immigrant should dress

When we move to another city or country, the way people in our new home often dress is different than in the previous city. Even in the small details these differences usually exist. If you are moving to Africa or Asia or from one of these continents to the American continent or Europe, expect even greater differences. I don't know how much the native peoples of Oceania adopt Westernized clothes. In Australia and New Zealand, as far as I know, it is quite common to adopt Western clothing, but in other countries on the continent I don't know how they dress.

At least in big countries like Brazil, the differences in the way of dressing between different cities are very evident. Perhaps in small countries where it is common to have relevant cultural events everywhere and traveling to other cities is fast and accessible, this profile is different. I haven't done that kind of analysis yet. But in Brazil, about twelve years ago, I observed how badly the men of Curitiba dressed, and was horrified that most of them wore jeans with running shoes. On one occasion I went to Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state where I was born, and observed the men there, to find out if running shoes with jeans were a passing fad of the time that I didn't know or if it was something for men of Curitiba. I have not seen any man in Belo Horizonte wearing running shoes with jeans on the days I was in the city for this trip. I only saw one with running shoes and a pair of shorts made of a more flexible fabric. A wrong choice, but in general I was able to confirm that the aesthetic sense of the people of Belo Horizonte was better than that of the people of Curitiba. And ... uff! It was not a fashion trend.

To what extent should we adapt to the way people dress in the place where we live?

We must adapt to our style what enriches it. Starting to wear running shoes with jeans because many Curitiba people don't have an aesthetic sense is a mistake. Curitiba's culture is so sexist. I have heard young women say sexist nonsense that my grandmothers, born at the turn of the last century, never spoke. And this is reflected in the way citizens dress. Many men want to prove they are men by showing that they don't care about fashion. And they wear horrible things. Anyone who doesn't have a macho mentality like theirs can easily demonstrate this through clothing and hopefully attract like-minded people.

This is true for many aspects of style as a non-verbal communication tool. And it can be adapted to different places and cultures. However, you need to be very careful when thinking about the professional image. Wearing formal clothes from an African country if you work in a European country for an European company tends to be a mistake.

Another important point is the ability of each person to be responsible for their choices. When we talk about personal style we are talking about personal identity, not identification with a group. It is about being able to go beyond the aspect of one group and express one's identity and personality without fear of being rejected and often being better accepted in many different groups instead of one.
