Yesterday when I went out for dinner I met a couple with a black dog that reminded me of Hercules, my last dog, but it had a narrower body and a longer snout.
Since I like dogs, I asked if it was a Lhasa Apso, knowing it wasn't, but I couldn't mentally identify the dog's breed, if it had one. She said it was a "big yorkshire". I explained that I found him similar to mine, which was a Lhasa, and also to the skye terrier breed, which is from the same group as the Yorkshire (Terrier), but bigger, and is a breed that I always wanted to have and in Brazil I never found a breeder. When she said yorkshire luckily she couldn't see my face as I was playing with the dog, because there is no such thing as an all black yorkshire and it was too big to be that breed (my facial expression would give away what I thought). Maybe she bought it like a yorkshire, without researching the breed standard (there are breeders who only care about the money, not respecting the breed standards they breed). Maybe she said it was a yorkshire because it's a popular breed, like the lhasa apso, and she thought I was the uninformed one and I wouldn't know the breed of dog.
I know the main standards of a fair amount of dog breeds pretty well because it's a subject I've always enjoyed studying. As well as themes related to fashion, art and other themes that arouse my interest since childhood and many others that I became interested in later on. And I think it's worth paying for purebred dogs and cats when they come from serious breeders who respect the breed's standards.
