Contrary to what some people think, a photographer is not someone who captures the moment. Amateur photographers capture the moment. I create images designed to make a certain impact. There is a whole production behind each photo shoot and each portrait produced by me nowadays.
Amateur photographers also don't have much idea of their costs, and before definitely deciding to go down this path I carefully analyzed mine.
Fine art photography relies on the photographer's repertoire to construct unique and meaningful images. I look for beauty in all people and also in things and places that are not always appreciated by the majority. And if I worked for many years with style consultancy, it was to contribute, with my experience, for more people to reveal and value the beauty they have. And I also learned a lot about low self-esteem, and how people with this trait sabotage themselves. So I'm not shy about making clear things like my choice not to edit skin and hair to make them look perfect and well-groomed when they fall far short of it in reality. A healthy self-esteem makes a difference in the look, in the person's attitude. Although some tricks that a good photographer knows can be useful to make an insecure person look confident, for example, if the person feels sexy, beautiful, the result is better.
I don't see imperfection in wrinkles. I've had one on my forehead since I was a kid, which has deepened over time. Even Mbappé, one of the best soccer players in the world, who is much younger than me, has wrinkles. I don't see imperfections in freckles or localised fat, and in so many other things.
As a photographer, if the client does not feel comfortable with any of his/her characteristics, I look for ways to deal with the issue without provoking his/her insecurity and without disrespecting the identity of my work. Proper lighting combined with makeup generally decreases the visibility of wrinkles. Proper styling can disguise how damaged long hair is. A transparent scarf can cover cellulite in a nude shoot without taking away the sensuality of the photos. Among other possible options.
There are features that I don't find beautiful. But I look for image resources, such as light, angles, styling, etc. that make the result have the desired impact. In my artistic projects, I avoid models that don't have the characteristics I'm looking for, that don't convey what I hope they convey. In commissioned works I use all my knowledge and repertoire to create more beautiful photos that are consistent with what the client expects, even if I don't find the person attractive.
Seeing one's own beauty is not the simplest thing in the world, but as I see mine, external and internal, I find it easier to see the beauty of others.
