🇬🇧 First steps to live alone

Let's talk about what we should know before living alone or moving to another city or country and also in the initial period after moving. Living alone or away from family brings challenges. We can learn from them, but if we can plan and prepare for them beforehand, life becomes easier.

My first tip is: learn at least the basics of cooking, in practice. Even if in your future home you have the budget to eat at restaurants on a daily basis, it's good to know how to prepare your own food.

Practice meditation. Living away from the family is an opportunity to develop self-knowledge, discover your own truths, your values, and mature. Meditation, and also a good therapist, can be very helpful in this process. Read the text on what is Buddhist enlightenment here on the site to realise the proper focus of meditation.

In addition to meditation, look for other ways to enjoy your own company, to not depend on others to do things you want or need to do. Here on the site there are tips on this in some texts.

Depending on your current professional qualification, seeking higher qualifications before moving is important. It doesn't matter if you're moving from a small town to a bigger one or moving to another country. In the case of moving to another country, learning the local language beforehand can be helpful, or at least familiarising yourself with it and the local culture.

For those who live alone, I recommend adopting a dog or two cats, if you like animals and are willing to shoulder the responsibilities of caring for pets, such as daily dog walks, games, dog training, vaccinations, worming, among others. Animals keep us company and dogs make us have to go out every day to walk them, increasing the chances of socialising with neighbours who also have dogs.

And, learn to keep the house clean and well managed. Using a vacuum cleaner is easy, but you need to know how to wash the bathroom and how often to do it; research places that wash curtains, rugs, etc if you have them at home; know the validity of the gas hose; when the electrical wiring of the property was changed and to have an idea of when it needs to be changed again, etc.
