Maybe you think of personal style as just about fashion. This is a very superficial view of the topic.

I'm Nycka, an expert in colours, shapes and textures as non-verbal communication tools, I work as a stylist, photographer and visual artist and in this text I'm going to talk about personal style with you.

You may have already noticed that, in addition to styles related to fashion (personal style and fashion styles), we know musical styles, decorating styles, photography styles, lifestyles and many others. You may also be familiar with the expression “brand identity” and, more recently, “gender identity”.

Identity and personal style are connected. There is no personal style if there is no sense of identity, if there is no self-knowledge.

In the communication process, whoever communicates something has to know how to use words (or emojis, on the internet) to express what he wants to whoever receives the information. Words are not going to change their meaning because someone wants them to. And if the person uses words whose meaning does not express what he means, the person receiving the information maybe interpret it differently than the sender had in mind. In non-verbal communication the same happens.

Knowing the latest fashion trends is not enough to be stylish. Having style is knowing how to intentionally communicate, through your appearance, who you are and what your goals are. No need to wear t-shirts with phrases (verbal language). Your appearance speaks for you anyway. Knowing how to control what it says is the key point, because without that it will send a lot of negative messages about you to people you want to have a positive impression of you.

Therefore, in a business meeting, a businessman who wears any navy blue suit, just because the navy blue suit is widely adopted in the corporate environment, conveys a weak image. A musician who takes to the stage dressed very similarly to other musicians of the same genre also conveys a weak image.

Is fashion important in developing personal style? Yes. Fashion evolves, as it is natural for people to evolve, and those who have style use fashion as a tool to demonstrate inner change.
