In many parts of the world, December 25th is the celebration of Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. And soon comes the celebration of the New Year. For world citizens, nomads like us, the most common traditions can be difficult to maintain. If we live alone or just with our partner in a place where we don't have other family members and we haven't built friendship bonds, the way is to create our own traditions. And even if we live in the same town as the family, sometimes it's better to create our own traditions than to deal with toxic family behaviour on those dates. Even in Brazil, where culturally the family is placed on a pedestal, awareness is growing that family members are often the cause of major problems. Whatever the reason, we can all celebrate the holiday season with our own rituals. I'll suggest a few and if you have other ideas, share them in the comments.
- Go out to dinner. Many restaurants close on these dates, but there are those that open and are good options for those who don't want to worry about supper. You can go alone, with your partner or with friends and acquaintances who are also expatriates, nomads or simply don't want to follow the old traditions and prefer to choose their company. Remember to book in advance.
- Gather people in your home who have contributed to your adaptation to your new home. This tip is for expatriates and nomads. You could, for example, have lunch on the 25th or dinner on January 1st and invite - in advance - the people who have contributed to your adjustment to your new home so far. It's a practical and kind way to thank them for the support you've received.
- Stay at home and create new rituals. Prepare a nice dinner, meditate, practice yoga, give thanks for the victories of the year, plan the next steps for new victories, separate things you no longer use to give away or throw away. Take a good bath. Relax listening to good music (there are many options in my Spotify profile).
- Travel. Changing the scenery for a few days can be a great way to recharge your batteries. If you are looking for quiet and uncrowded places, even better. Sometimes just spending a weekend in a good hotel in a nearby city, without worrying about preparing dinner or washing the dishes, is a great choice.
- Celebrate with your love. Need better company? (If you don't have a love, your 4-legged love is also good).
Share your favourite holiday rituals, or what you would do if you were going to spend this time of year away from your family.
