🇬🇧 How to start a business in Switzerland not being from the European Union

Switzerland is a charming country. I tried to discover how someone could obtain a visa to enter the country as an entrepreneur and today I share what I found. Being Brazilian, I asked for more information for people who are not from the European Union. The rules for people from countries which are members of the EU are possibly a bit different.

Someone who is not from the European Union can enter the country as self employed if the following conditions are met:

  1. This is in the interest of the Swiss economy as a whole;
  2. The necessary financial and operational requirements are fulfilled (Art. 19 FNIA);
  3. The personal qualification is met: highly qualified, e.g. managers, specialists and other qualified persons. Generally, this requirement is met by individuals with a university degree or equal education as well as long term working experience (Art. 23 FNIA).

The person must require a work permit beforehand directly to the competent cantonal immigration and labour market authority. More than the usual documents you need also to present information about the development of the company, such as intended activities, market opportunities, the development of personal capacities (qualitative and quantitative) as well as planned capital investments and revenues/financial output. Existing organisational connections with other companies have to be revealed and the certificate of the company foundation / entry in the commercial register have to be submitted.

The work permit allows the person and his/her spouse to enter the country to start a business and if the spouse decides to start another business a new request is dispensable.

The work permit is valid for two years when you enter the country to start a new business. If it will be renewed depends on the results the business achieved and the positive impact caused by it.
