🇬🇧 The differences between who is a fashion victim and who has style

Do you know the differences between who is a fashion victim and who has style?

I am Nycka, an expert in colours, shapes and textures as non-verbal communication tools, I work as a stylist, photographer and visual artist and in this text I will talk about these differences.

Those who are fashion victims emphasise the trends of the season and buy a lot and often (a lot of purchases each season). Because they buy a lot, they commonly buy fast fashion, low-quality pieces, but some may also buy high-end or luxury brands.

The fashion victim does not have a defined style. (S)He doesn't know how to differentiate catwalk style from personal style (I've already talked about this in another text). (S)He usually coordinates the pieces exactly as seen on the show, or in a fashion editorial, on the internet or as a celebrity wore it (in a movie or series, for example). (S)He can also adapt these references according to what (s)he has available.

The fashion victim is an insecure person, with low self-esteem, who lives looking for acceptance, and his/her fashion choices reveal that (s)he is like a chameleon, trying to be accepted into groups by dressing similarly to the people in these groups. If (s)he is over twenty years of age, this demonstrates emotional immaturity. At this age, one should already be seeking self-expression through ones fashion choices and is not doing so out of fear of rejection. (S)He can also present compulsion for purchases, as in the case of the central character of the book “Confessions of a shopaholic”, by Sophie Kinsella, which also has a cinematographic version.

The person with style has individual professional guidance to use their appearance as a non-verbal communication tool, as a form of self-expression. She doesn't follow mass media cues because she knows it distances her from having her own style. And she also does not ignore the importance of individual professional guidance, as she knows that professional guidance brings information that she will not find on any website, blog, magazine or any mass media channel. She buys fewer pieces each season, investing in higher quality and pieces that add value to her style. Her appearance is unique, does not imitate anyone. She uses fashion and trends as a tool to demonstrate her style and personal development and is generally more emotionally mature than “fashion victims”, and has healthier self-esteem.

The treatment of the compulsion to buy clothes and accessories, which can be a characteristic of fashion victims, involves guidance from psychologists or psychiatrists, and guidance from a stylist is useful for the person to unlearn compulsive behaviours and learn healthy consumption behaviours, that value her.
