The biggest lie in fashion retailing is the promise of "style" in clothing stores.
I'm Nycka, specialist in colours, shapes and textures as non-verbal communication tools. I work as a stylist, photographer and visual artist and in this text I will talk about the demands of style.
I wouldn't talk about it here if I didn't realise that there are people with high purchasing power who believe this lie. Lack of knowledge to judge and even ignorance about what kind of professional to look for to resolve these doubts are perhaps contributing factors to deceive so many people.
You're in the right place, reading the contents of a stylist with over forty years of experience in the fashion industry.
The flaw in the promise of style exists for several reasons, which is why the title of this text is "The demands of style".
For personal style to exist, there must be some factors combined. Among them self-awareness and information to be intentional when using your appearance as a non-verbal communication tool. Your appearance IS a non-verbal communication tool, and if you don't know how to use it intentionally, it speaks badly about you.
There is no style in imitation, in dressing similar to how people in your circles dress, how the outfit was presented at the show, how a celebrity or influencer wore it or how it appeared in some fashion editorial, for example.
Courage and self-confidence are a necessary part of the alchemy of developing personal style, because those with well-developed personal styles have a unique style that doesn't fit labels. Even if (s)he is an understated person, the person who has a well-developed personal style is unique. As such, no store can promise style. Not even those calling salespeople personal stylists.
A personal style can only be developed with individual professional guidance and does not happen in a single consultation. It's a process.
Style is obviously associated with your purchasing power, including the need to have the resources to pay the stylist, but not everything expensive is attractive to people who have a strong personal style. Several luxury brands today have products made for the nouveau riche with terrible taste. And this is one more reason to turn to professionals and look for elegant, well-finished and refined garments.
