I know that many media channels, and profiles on LinkedIn and other social networks say that you should wear navy blue, black or gray suits to professional appointments. Many men follow this even outside the professional environment. But do you know what you communicate when making that choice?
I'm an expert in colours and shapes as non-verbal communication tools and if you're not familiar with my work, you might be surprised to learn that your appearance communicates much more than you might think. When you follow what the media says, or what the majority does, you are leaving your personality aside, and personal style is using your personal image as a non-verbal communication tool to show the characteristics of your personality that make the most sense in every occasion. What does this have to do with navy blue suits?
If you have a high leadership position, are a reference in your field, a creative professional or professional artist, by following the herd in your clothing choices you communicate being the exact opposite of what you are. It shows insecurity. You prove to be the obedient sheep, not the shepherd of the flock. And even though currently in some countries there is an outcry for equality, in terms of equal rights this is fair, but each individual is unique and should value that through their appearance. You are not a leader because you are like most people. You are not a successful architect for doing everything the same as others do. You are not a successful musician following the herd. What's wrong with showing this through your appearance? And I'm not talking about ostentation. Ostentation is a sign of extreme bad taste and low self-esteem, as well as a lack of qualified guidance.
Also, no colour looks good on everyone. I mean, it is possible to find shades of blue that enhance your appearance, but maybe navy blue is not among them. The same goes for other colours. And being able to find shades of all of them that flatter you does not mean that it is likely, that there is certainly a shade of each colour that looks good on you. Pure black and white doesn't look good on everyone. I have mentioned this in several publications in the past. Possibly I will talk more in the future because even giving clear examples of this over a decade ago, there are people who still don't understand.
