This text should have been published yesterday. Last week I talked about meditation and days ago I received two interesting questions: "How do I know if I am meditating correctly?" and another who wants to know the benefits of meditation. I started practicing the meditation that I suggested in the text "How to start meditating" twenty years ago. I have gained the understanding that I have today for the past ten years. I am not a guru on the subject, I only share my positive experiences which can be useful to others. And today I will explain how you can check if you are meditating "correctly" and the benefits of meditation.
When you have a super fast car you need to be in control of its steering, right? That's why Formula 1 drivers usually start with karts and switch categories to learn how to control steering step by step, first on slower and easier to control vehicles, then on faster ones, all the way to Formula 1.
Direction matters. Not only in Formula 1. If you don't know where you want to go, there is no way to know if you are on the right path. There is no way to know if you are meditating correctly. Also, you can't see benefits if you don't know what you want and what meditation can offer. A few years ago I read some books by Joseph Campbell and I realised that one of the commonalities of the various religions is that they seek personal development, and each has its own way of transmitting it. Meditation is part of Eastern religious rituals, like some Buddhist lineages (I don't know if all of them). To understand this role of meditation and visualise how to exercise it as a primary goal, read the text “What is Buddhist enlightenment”.
By pursuing personal development through meditation, you can develop the ability to better control your emotions and this is helpful in achieving many personal goals. You can seek a psychologist for support if you wish. With meditation you can find the answers within yourself. This can take time, and there is a reason: just like you go to the gym to exercise your body and get a certain result by exercising daily, when you meditate you are exercising your brain and if you notice your negative patterns you can exercise your brain to modify them. Due to the lack of references, it can be difficult to “create” positive models to replace negative ones. Then the support of a psychologist can be useful. In addition to art (I'm not talking about art as a mass culture, I'm talking about another type of art). Whether in the gym or in meditation you can quickly see some benefits. The most superficial results are easily noticed.
I also read yesterday a person commenting on the fitness of some celebrities who practice meditation. It is not meditation that causes this. Public people generally take care of their body and in the case of actors, musicians and models the body is a working tool. Meditation can lead someone to develop their self-esteem to the point of trying to eat better, exercise, regularly cut their hair, enhance their natural beauty, dress better, etc. The physical aspect is limited to this indirect action.
So, returning to the question of correct practice, if you suffer from paralysing anxiety in certain situations, for example, meditation can be useful for controlling that anxiety. And by controlling anxiety you can do things that once seemed impossible. The result is clear if the goal is clear and keep practicing constant. If the goal is clear, you can clearly see when you are moving away. I had a pretty busy week, so on Monday I was unable to publish this text on wellness as I wanted. Missing adjustments. But I publish it now that I have finished it, on Tuesday, rather than making the content wait until the following Monday. This is a way to notice deviations and take action to get back into focus.
