If you are interested in Brazilian culture, if you have Brazilian friends or are planning to live in Brazil, I have a literary tip for you.
The book “Dom Casmurro”, by Machado de Assis. Any Brazilian who has completed elementary school has, in theory, read this book. It is a classic of Brazilian literature. Published in 1899, the book has a similar plot to that of Anna Karenina, by Lev Tolstoy, and deals with Bentinho's story in the first person. The character's insecurities are revealed more subtly than in Tolstoy's work, so that those who do not pay attention to the psychological construction of the work still wonder whether or not he has been betrayed by his beloved.
Reading such an ancient work and observing that this behaviour is still found today in many Brazilian men is frightening because it shows the immaturity and the difficulty of emotional maturation of the population.
Brazil is a country with very conservative customs and this is one of the big negative points of life in the country, especially for women. Of course, not everyone is that backward, but a significant portion of the population is content to repeat things as they always have been.
Have you read Dom Casmurro? What parallels do you make between the protagonist's behaviour and that of Brazilians in today's society?
