🇬🇧 How to calculate cost of living in another city

Some websites have approximate cost of living information of different cities around the world. This text aims to guide you to calculate your cost of living when you decide to live in another city or country. That's because the cost of living varies depending on your lifestyle.

You should research, about the place where you want to live:

    • Housing cost. Rent, condominium, and other fees for housing. Also power, internet and telephone.
    • Food costs. Cost of a full restaurant meal is a starting basis. Of course if you cook at home your cost will be lower, but a tourist can easily get a sense of the prices of good restaurants to calculate the monthly expense of eating this way, but it will be more difficult to calculate the price of a complete purchase at the supermarket before living in that place. Calculating on the basis of prices of restaurants that you consider good has the advantage of, after the move, it allows you to have a small capital surplus if you choose to make your own food.
    • Transportation costs. Whether public transport costs or costs for owning and maintaining a car.
    • Costs with fees and taxes.
    • Leisure costs. Here you exclude the option of dining out because it is already part of the food calculation. But it includes costs in bars, cinema, travel, theatre, museums, clubs, sports practices, etc.
    • Service costs. Here it depends on which services you use. Think about banks, courses, subscriptions (TV, magazines, etc), health, personal services (stylist, driver, masseuse, beautician, hairdresser, housekeeper, cook, etc), etc. that have not been included in the other categories.
    • Other costs. Think about the costs you have today and don't fall into the above categories. For example: I have cats. I must include the costs with them in my planning.
