Today we are going to talk about how to start a business in New Zealand. As I mentioned in other texts, many countries are very receptive to people who want to contribute to their economic growth, and have the option of a visa for entrepreneurs interested in starting a business there. In my most recent research I noticed that some countries are not that receptive, but New Zealand is.
There are basically 2 types of visa for entrepreneurs (for those who want to start a business) and two more for those who are already in the country and want to take up residence and already have a company that enjoys some solidity in the market.
It is worth remembering that New Zealand is a paradise of breathtaking natural beauty, which attracts travellers from all over the world.
Let's start with the criteria for you to obtain the “Entrepreneur work visa”, the general visa for entrepreneurs.
You need:
- Make a capital investment of at least one hundred thousand New Zealand dollars. If your business is in the field of science or ITC or shows high potential for innovation or export, they may ignore this criterion.
- Score at least 120 points on the Entrepreneur Work Visa point scale.
- Have a business plan for the business you plan to buy or establish in the country.
This visa allows you to live in the country for one year with your startup and two more years after prove that your business is progressing. You can also include your partner and dependent children under the age of 19.
Then you can apply for the “Entrepreneur Residence” visa, which is to reside permanently in the country.
The other entry visa format is the “Global impact work visa”. The criteria for obtaining it are:
- You must be selected by Edmund Hillary Fellowship to participate in a 3-year program.
- You must have thirty-six thousand New Zealand dollars in maintenance funds to cover your expenses and that of your family in the first year.
- You must have a high standard of English.
With this visa you can participate in the Edmund Hillary Fellowship program; work, study and live in New Zealand for 3 years and include your partner and dependent children under the age of 19.
If you reach a period of 30 months participating in the program, you can apply for the “Global impact permanent residence” visa. The criteria for this permanence visa are to participate in the Edmund Hillary Fellowship program for at least 30 months, having the specific visa and having the organization's continuous support. And once you get the permanent visa, you can live, work and study in New Zealand; travel to and from New Zealand as you wish and include your partner and dependent children aged up to 24 years. After this visa you can apply for citizenship in the country. To do this, you should consult the internal affairs department.
The other permanent visa is the “Entrepreneur resident”. The criteria for requesting it are:
- Have been self-employed for at least 6 months.
- If you apply for this visa with less than 2 years living in the country as an entrepreneur, you must have an invested capital of at least five hundred thousand New Zealand dollars and have created at least 3 jobs in the country.
This visa gives you the right to continue operating your business in the country; live, work and study in New Zealand and include your partner and dependent children aged up to 24 years. With this visa you are entitled to permanent residence in the country.
