As I already mentioned reasons for being a polyglot, today we will think about how to choose which languages to study. I am not going to make a list of languages, but I believe that, for non-native speakers of English-speaking countries, English is essential. For native speakers of English I believe that the main language to be studied nowadays, mainly due to its strength in social networks, is Brazilian Portuguese.
The third language and the following I believe that we must choose by cultural affinities. And that is why I chose Italian as the 3rd language and I am learning Finnish as the 4th language. Some people make this choice based on geography, looking for languages from neighboring countries. It is an option, but it is not my way. In Brazil, Spanish would be the geographical choice and can be professionally advantageous, as we are surrounded by countries that speak this language, but personally I was never interested because it is very similar to Italian and I preferred to prioritize Italian. Maybe when I am fluent in Finnish I will study Spanish, or French.
So we have another point to analyse: What is the order of languages? I've met people who speak Spanish and Italian and mix both. So, my suggestion and it is my way, is to alternate a Latin language with a non-Latin one, for example. Less confusion in life. Try to learn a language that is quite different from the last one you studied.
