🇬🇧 7 reasons to become a polyglot

Polyglots are people who speak many languages. I am currently trilingual. I speak and understand fairly well Portuguese, which is my mother tongue; English, which is my second language by choice; and Italian, my third language by choice. I am currently beginning to study Finnish.

So, let's go to the reasons for studying several languages:

1. Cultural enrichment. By learning languages we learn something about the culture of the places where that language is the main one.

2. It opens doors to do business with companies from countries that speak that language. Of course, knowing only English it is possible to do this, but knowing the language and cultural peculiarities is very useful and shows interest and affinities.

3. The range of study materials becomes much greater. Those who speak only one or two languages have access to a limited number of literary works, books and films. And the more languages we study, the more that number increases.

4. Understanding music, books and movies in their original language is much better than accessing translations or watching dubbed or subtitled movies. In the case of films, it is common for those who do not understand the original language to miss many of the jokes that only make sense in that language.

5. Learn to think differently. Each language has a different logic and when we learn that logic we learn a new way of seeing the world.

6. It is also easier to make friends with natives of the languages we study and people with common affinities, for reasons similar to those I mentioned in topic 2. Those who only have English can, but knowing the language of the other has some advantages.

7. Personal satisfaction. Ok, it is very practical to have external reasons to motivate us to study, but the main thing is personal satisfaction, the interest in knowing those languages simply because you want it.

It also has the advantage, for those who are employed, of opening doors to their career. Even abroad.

Feel free to comment on your reasons for studying other languages.
