What should a person over the age of 60, in the so-called third age, wear? What style should he or she adopt?
I'm Nycka, a stylist with more than forty years of experience in the fashion industry and I work with the personal image as a non-verbal communication tool. In this text I will talk about the style of people aged 60 and over.
Personal style is linked to the individual maturation process, self-knowledge and the use of the personal image as a non-verbal communication tool. Each person is a universe, and adult life is a continuation of the developmental process that we can consider starting when we are born. Every day we have the opportunity to get to know each other, to review our beliefs, our preferences, our prejudices, our fears and everything in between.
A person of sixty or older should already have a lot of self-knowledge and self-esteem, but we know that's not always the case.
One of the things I love about thinking of self-image as a nonverbal communication tool is that the choices of people who don't have my professional orientation scream out a lot of positive and negative characteristics. There's no use talking about ageism if you act immaturely and don't take responsibility for your personal, professional, and style choices as an adult. If your image conveys immaturity, you're making the wrong choices. Perhaps you lack the self-confidence to invest in a qualified guide, like mine. Perhaps what is missing is maturity.
How people in this age group dress greatly depends on their self-image and lifestyle, in addition to the factors mentioned above.
Having style is valuing what makes you unique and knowing how to use your appearance as a non-verbal communication tool. People in their 60s and older already have or should have enough self-awareness to have a different way of dressing and a strong personal style, but we don't see this often. And even among those who do, they are unlikely to master the use of self-image as a nonverbal communication tool. My guidance as a stylist transforms it.
In this age group, a jovial image is smarter than looking like a teenager. Looking like a teenager demonstrates emotional immaturity. In this case, a psychologist may be a more urgent need than a stylist.
Knowing how to use your appearance as a nonverbal communication tool will contribute to your self-knowledge, your success in social and romantic relationships, the sophistication of your appearance, and clarity in your communication, among other benefits.
